Mississippi isn’t an outlier when it comes to organized hate activity — but 2026 has made the pattern harder to ignore. A synagogue burned in Jackson in January. A suitcase of Klan documents surfaced in a state government closet in March. And researchers who track this activity for a living say the groups themselves are changing shape, trading street rallies for school board seats and statehouse testimony[1]. Here’s what’s documented, what to watch for, and what residents can actually do about it.
How many hate groups are operating in Mississippi right now
The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hate Map tracked five hate and antigovernment groups active in Mississippi in 2025, part of a 33-group total across the Gulf South (Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama)[1]. The named Mississippi groups include the American Family Association, a Tupelo-based media and lobbying organization SPLC designates an anti-LGBTQ hate group, and Active Club chapters — a loosely networked white-nationalist movement that recruits through combat-sport sparring sessions rather than public rallies[2]. Mississippi has also seen flyering campaigns from Patriot Front, the white-nationalist group that splintered off from Vanguard America after the 2017 Charlottesville rally[1].
SPLC President and CEO Margaret Huang argues the year-over-year numbers understate the threat: “The decline does not serve as evidence of diminishing appeal but should be viewed as successful mainstreaming of ideologies”[2]. SPLC Intelligence Project deputy director Rachel Carroll Rivas described the same shift in blunter terms: “We saw a lot more of the tactic by hate groups trying to get their agenda passed in policy and government”[1] — testifying at school board meetings and lobbying state legislatures instead of marching in the street, where a camera phone can end a career.
Two 2026 cases that show what this looks like on the ground
The Beth Israel Congregation arson, January 10, 2026. A predawn fire tore through Jackson’s Beth Israel Congregation, the state’s largest and oldest synagogue, destroying its library and administrative offices and damaging or destroying seven Torahs. Security video showed someone splashing liquid inside the lobby before the blaze ignited[3]. Nineteen-year-old Stephen Spencer Pittman was arrested the same night and later indicted on a first-degree arson charge with a hate-crime enhancement; investigators say he confessed to setting the fire because of the building’s “Jewish ties,” calling it the “synagogue of Satan” in interviews with the FBI[3]. The damage struck the same part of the building the Klan bombed in 1967 to punish the congregation’s rabbi for his public support of civil rights — a parallel ProPublica called “painful echoes” of that earlier attack[4].

Employees preparing to relocate the Mississippi Department of Public Safety’s Jackson headquarters found a small blue suitcase in a closet containing a White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan handbook, Klan charters, a robe, recruitment pamphlets (including one titled “The Ugly Truth about Martin Luther King”), meeting minutes, and dues ledgers[5]. The White Knights were responsible for at least 10 killings in the 1960s, including the 1964 murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell said the materials would be preserved rather than destroyed: “By preserving these artifacts and shedding light on such organizations, we help ensure that future generations are never led astray by such hate”[5]. The records have since been transferred to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History for public research access.
What to Watch For
Researchers who track this activity flag the same warning signs over and over. None of these alone proves organized hate activity is present, but together they’re the pattern to notice:
- Flyers, stickers, and banners with vague “patriotic” branding that link to a website where the actual racist or antisemitic content lives, rather than stating it outright on the flyer itself[6].
- Recruitment aimed at teenagers and young adults through gyms, gaming communities, and combat-sport clubs — the same on-ramp Active Club networks use nationally[6].
- Sudden, coordinated appearances at school board or city council meetings pushing a narrow culture-war agenda — the “establishment” tactic SPLC’s researchers say is replacing street rallies[1].
- Threats or vandalism targeting a specific house of worship, community center, or family rather than random property crime — these get investigated very differently once a hate-crime motive is documented, as in the Beth Israel case[3].
- Old hate-group material surfacing in unexpected places — estate sales, inherited paperwork, government archives — is worth reporting to a museum, archive, or civil rights organization rather than discarding, so it can be documented and studied instead of quietly disappearing.
What residents can actually do
Mississippi’s own recent history offers examples of pushback working. Mississippi communities have organized formal responses to documented hate activity rather than treating each incident as isolated, and tracking these incidents week to week is part of how patterns get identified before they escalate. Concretely:
- Report suspected hate crimes to local police and the FBI’s Civil Rights tip line (tips.fbi.gov) — federal hate-crime charges, like the enhancement filed in the Beth Israel case, generally require documentation beyond a local police report.
- Report hate flyers, stickers, and banners to SPLC’s Hate Map submission process (splcenter.org/hate-map) so incidents get logged into the same dataset researchers and journalists use.
- Support local organizations already doing this work — the Mississippi NAACP, the Mississippi Center for Justice, and the state’s Jewish community organizations have all responded publicly to 2026’s incidents and can direct volunteer or donation support where it’s most needed.
- Show up to school board and city council meetings when a coordinated push appears — SPLC’s researchers specifically point to these venues as where “establishment” tactics are being tested, which means organized local attendance is a direct countermeasure.
The Bottom Line
Mississippi’s hate-group count on paper — five groups in 2025, down from seven the year before — understates what researchers, and 2026’s headlines, actually show: a synagogue set on fire over its “Jewish ties,” a Klan archive resurfacing in a state office building, and organizations that have learned street visibility isn’t necessary when a policy platform and a school board seat work just as well. The tools for pushing back — documentation, reporting, and organized public presence — are the same ones Mississippi communities have already used this year.
