Case: Robert Elliott, Greenville, Mississippi

The Greenville Police Department publicly released the identity of Robert Elliott, a Mississippi man found deceased in July ^[1]. Local authorities said the Black individual’s body “appeared to have been wrapped in a tarp and burned” ^[1].

Days after that release, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett wrote in a social media post: “Black Americans are being found hanging in 2026. For generations, Black people were lynched while institutions stood by and did nothing. We cannot repeat that history. I’m demanding a full investigation from the DOJ” ^[1].

Crockett’s letter, addressed to Attorney General Todd Blanche and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, asks the DOJ to probe and prosecute “possible instances of modern-day lynchings” ^[1].

She also wrote that any instance of a deceased Black person hanging from a tree or elevated structure and ruled a death by suicide “should be met with rigorous examination by federal authorities” ^[1].
