Who is Nolan Wells
Nolan Xavier Wells was an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, a 2025 graduate of Ocean Springs High School who had gone on to play wide receiver as a rising sophomore at Southwest Mississippi Community College (WLOX, 2026a; The Shade Room, 2026a). Southwest Mississippi Community College President Dr. J. Steven Bishop issued a statement mourning him as news of his death spread (WXXV News 25, 2026).
Saturday, July 4: A holiday trip to Horn Island
On the afternoon of Saturday, July 4, 2026, Wells traveled by private boat to Horn Island — a barrier island roughly 10 miles south of Pascagoula, Mississippi, accessible only by boat — with a group of friends to celebrate Independence Day (Capital B News, 2026; NOLA.com, 2026). He was last seen around 3 p.m.; the sheriff’s office initially described his swim trunks as black and later corrected that to blue, with no shirt and sunglasses (WLOX, 2026b). His best friend, 17-year-old Jayvon Williams, said the two were together that afternoon and that Wells told him he loved him before they parted on the island (The Shade Room, 2026b). Friends have said the group’s boat left the island without Wells and that his companions assumed he had found another ride back to the mainland (The Shade Room, 2026b). Wells’s phone was later found separated from him and eventually returned to his mother (NOLA.com, 2026).
When Wells did not come home that night, his mother, Christine Wonsley, contacted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office late Saturday to report him missing (WLOX, 2026c).
Sunday, July 5: A multi-agency search launches
At 12:26 p.m., U.S. Coast Guard Sector Mobile received an assistance request from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and issued an urgent marine broadcast, deploying a helicopter (WLOX, 2026d). Five minutes later, JCSO publicly released Wells’s description: an 18-year-old Black male, 6′1″, 180 pounds (WLOX, 2026b). By that evening, JCSO had established a command post at the Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs (WLOX, 2026d). Over the course of the day, the search grew to include the Gulf Islands National Seashore/National Park Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the Biloxi Fire Department, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, and the volunteer United Cajun Navy (Capital B News, 2026; NOLA.com, 2026). United Cajun Navy Incident Commander Josh Gill said the group received word from Wells’s mother and a cousin and “jumped into action really quickly,” and that by the time crews were searching in earnest, Wells had “not been heard from in close to 24 hours” (Capital B News, 2026; NOLA.com, 2026).
Monday, July 6: The body is found
Search crews resumed at daybreak, with United Cajun Navy aircraft launching around 6 a.m. and boats back on the water shortly after (WLOX, 2026d). At approximately 8:45 a.m., a U.S. National Park Service ranger discovered a body in the water just offshore of the northwest end of Horn Island (WLOX, 2026c). Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said the recovery “does match the description” of Wells, though formal identification awaited DNA testing (Capital B News, 2026; WLOX, 2026c). The search was subsequently called off (Fox News, 2026). Family members were brought to the Lake Mars command post to meet Sheriff Ledbetter and Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd, then taken to the coroner’s office in Pascagoula, where Lynd said there was “no reason to believe it is not him” pending DNA confirmation (WLOX, 2026c).
Around 1 p.m., Christine Wonsley confirmed her son’s death in a Facebook post, asking for privacy for herself and Wells’s father, Elmore Wonsley, as the family began to grieve (Mississippi Free Press, 2026b).
Tuesday, July 7: Identity confirmed, fundraiser passes six figures
Around 2 p.m., Coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed through DNA testing and dental records that the recovered body was Nolan Wells (WLOX, 2026a). The family retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump (WLOX, 2026a). Investigators said there was no indication of drug or alcohol involvement at that point, with a toxicology report and the coroner’s autopsy still pending (WLOX, 2026a).
A GoFundMe organized by Allayah Denis, “In Loving Memory of Nolan Xavier Wells,” raised more than $100,000 overnight toward funeral and memorial costs; Wonsley said publicly that it is the only official fundraiser for the family (TheGrio, 2026; Denis, 2026).
What remains unconfirmed
As of this writing, several facts are still pending official confirmation: the toxicology report, the coroner’s final cause-of-death ruling, and the precise circumstances under which Wells became separated from his friends’ boat. NewsOne has published a list of open questions about the timeline between Wells being last seen and the search response (NewsOne, 2026); those are reported here as questions that outlet raised, not as established facts. No agency has announced findings of wrongdoing, and no individual has been named as a suspect.

Methodology and corrections: Every fact above is attributed to a named news organization, official agency statement, or the family’s verified fundraiser. Where outlets disagreed on a detail (for example, the color of Wells’s swim trunks), we cite the sheriff’s office’s corrected description. This is a developing story — for continuously updated coverage, see our live-updates tracker. If any fact here is later corrected by investigators, this article will be updated and the correction noted.
