Evening News Recap — September 13, 2026

Here is what shaped Black America and civil rights today.

1. White Supremacist Group Activity: White Supremacists Turn SPLC Indictment Into a Recruiting Tool

In April 2026, a federal grand jury indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center, and white supremacists on Telegram and Gab quickly seized on the charges to discredit hate-group research and expand recruitment.[1]

  • A federal grand jury in April 2026 charged the SPLC with wire fraud, bank fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
  • Prosecutors allege the SPLC secretly funneled more than US$3 million in donated funds to people associated with violent extremist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nations.
  • U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said eight informants received the money between 2014 and 2023.
  • SPLC interim president Bryan Fair said the informant program “saved lives,” and the group denies the charges and seeks dismissal as “vindictive prosecution.”
  • A May 6 Telegram search identified 22 posts mentioning the SPLC across at least six white nationalist channels, including the White Lives Matter Official channel, which urged users to “become an activist for your race.”

2. Police Brutality: 18-Year-Old Charged After Fatal Shooting at Brighton Apartment Complex

4. Executive Orders: Keeping DEI Didn’t Cost Companies a Thing, New Research Finds

A new paper published through UC Berkeley’s Democracy Policy Lab found no meaningful difference in stock returns or revenue between S&P 500 companies that kept their DEI commitments after Executive Order 14173 and those that rolled them back.[4]

  • “Markets Do Not Punish Firms for Maintaining DEI” was co-authored by Jacob Grumbach, an associate professor at UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy, who began the project when it was unclear how the January 2025 executive order would be enforced.
  • Because companies rarely describe their DEI programs the same way, the team checked four factors — public statements, regulatory filings, shareholder votes and third-party tracking — and Grumbach said “no matter which measure you use, you find the same findings.”
  • On the revenue side, the average effect across every version of the analysis came out to exactly 0.00.
  • Grumbach called Costco and Target “the most consumer salient pairing,” describing a Target boycott led mostly by Black churches and American liberals after it ended DEI publicly while Costco publicly doubled down — a spending shift the study found did not translate into a lasting difference in stock performance.
  • Separately, the EEOC has moved to scrap a decades-old requirement that employers report their workforce’s race and gender data to the government, and most of the country’s biggest companies have already stripped explicit diversity requirements from their board governing documents.

5. Hate Crimes: Bellingham Man Enters Plea on Hate Crime Charges in Walmart Bathroom Incident

Terry Young entered a plea on hate crime and harassment charges after allegedly threatening to kill a man and calling him racial slurs in a Walmart bathroom.[5]

  • He is accused of threatening to kill a man and calling him racial slurs.
  • The encounter happened in a Walmart bathroom.

Looking Ahead

The Southern Poverty Law Center is pressing its defense against the April 2026 federal indictment, denying the wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges and seeking dismissal as “vindictive prosecution.” In Brighton, police describe their investigation into the fatal apartment complex shooting as ongoing, with the 18-year-old suspect facing charges in connection with the death. Meanwhile, the EEOC has moved to scrap the decades-old requirement that employers report their workforce’s race and gender data to the government.
