UN Iran Fact-Finding Mission calls for end to hostilities after US strikes kill civilians

The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran Monday called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and comply with international humanitarian law following reported US airstrikes that killed and injured civilians in southern Iran. The Mission said that two strikes in Hormozgan province raise serious questions about whether the United States took all necessary precautions to protect civilians during military operations.[1]

Saudi Arabia Calls Mecca a ‘Red Line’ After Alleged Houthi Drone Attack on the Holy Site

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday accused the Iran-backed Houthis of an attempted attack on Mecca, the holiest city in Islam and a site of pilgrimage for Muslims worldwide. Colonel Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen, said that the Houthis launched a drone toward Mecca on Tuesday evening, but it was shot down by the Saudi Air Defense Forces before entering the city’s restricted airspace.[2]

US military claims Strait of Hormuz remains open amid ongoing blockade

The comments from a US CENTCOM spokesperson come amid heightened tensions over shipping through the vital waterway. Despite an ongoing blockade on Iranian maritime trade and attacks by Iran’s military on commercial ships, the United States military has said US forces have kept the Strait of Hormuz open to commercial shipping, including the facilitation of hundreds of millions of barrels of oil through the strategic waterway.[3]

US may have committed war crimes in Iran strikes that killed dozens of kids, UN-backed experts say

GENEVA (AP) – Human rights experts commissioned by the U.N.’s top human rights body say they have found “reasonable grounds” to believe the United States committed war crimes in two strikes in Iran, including on a school in the southern city of Minab. The international fact-finding mission on Iran says the findings center on a pair of airstrikes that killed at least 178 civilians, including women and children.[4]

Lebanon security talks in Paris to focus on post-UNIFIL alternatives

The security talks come as Israeli forces continue to carry out attacks across southern Lebanon despite a “ceasefire”. European and Arab military chiefs are meeting in Paris to assess the Lebanese Armed Forces’ needs and discuss the looming end of the United Nations peacekeeping mission UNIFIL, amid fears of a renewed Israeli military campaign in southern Lebanon.[5]
