Infrastructure Watch — Daily Update — August 12, 2026

Water utilities in at least a dozen states are coping with fallout from a wave of cyberattacks, and Washington is now fighting over who is responsible — a journalist alleges the FBI has traced the assaults to Iran, while President Trump blames Minnesota. Overseas, a drone strike destroyed a key Libyan substation, and a German energy CEO openly concedes his grid cannot be fully protected.

Key Takeaways

  • Cyberattacks have disrupted water and wastewater utilities in at least a dozen states — including Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia, South Dakota, New Jersey, and Arkansas — shutting off a well, lowering water pressure, and prompting conservation notices (Yahoo News, 2026a).
  • Minnesota was hit first and hardest, with more than 30 community water systems targeted on July 26–27; the FBI warned on July 30 that hackers were degrading operations at water plants (Yahoo News, 2026a).
  • In Braham, Minn., the mayor said the hackers could “just turn the well off, basically,” forcing residents to conserve water for several hours (Yahoo News, 2026a).
  • Journalist David Road alleges the FBI found Iran “successfully attacked 36 water supply systems” and that the White House is hiding it; President Trump instead blames Minnesota officials and Gov. Tim Walz (Eadaily, 2026).
  • A drone strike destroyed Libya’s South Zawiya substation Wednesday, and GECOL warns further attacks could trigger a partial or complete shutdown of the national grid (The Peninsula Qatar, 2026; Libya Herald, 2026).
  • E.ON CEO Leonhard Birnbaum says Germany’s grid cannot be fully protected from drones — complete protection is “illusory” (Yahoo News, 2026b).

1. Water Supply: FBI Probes Iran Role in Multi-State Cyberattacks

Cyberattacks have hit water and wastewater utility operations in at least a dozen states over the last few months, according to (Yahoo News, 2026a). The incidents have shut off a well, lowered water pressure, and prompted residents to conserve water, though Yahoo News reports that drinking water has not been affected (2026a).

Minnesota was the first location hit and seemingly the hardest, with more than 30 community water systems targeted on July 26 and 27 (Yahoo News, 2026a). The FBI issued a public service announcement on July 30 saying that since July 27, hackers had breached security at water operations plants, “degrading” their operations (Yahoo News, 2026a). The FBI later warned about incidents in at least seven states, and within days the number of affected locations climbed to a dozen (Eadaily, 2026; Yahoo News, 2026a).

In Braham, Minnesota, a local water operator discovered the pump at the treatment plant wasn’t working, threatening the flow of water to homes (NPR, 2026). Crews took the plant offline and urged the city’s roughly 1,700 residents to conserve water while drawing on a backup supply; workers restored the flow in a couple of hours by taking manual control of the pump (NPR, 2026). Mayor Nate George told MPR News the hackers could “just turn the well off, basically” (Yahoo News, 2026a).

Michigan confirmed similar activity across nine systems, with operators keeping them running safely, and state police are working with Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (Yahoo News, 2026a). The FBI has advised utilities to change passwords, isolate networks, and take vulnerable systems offline to help protect against attacks (Yahoo News, 2026a).

American investigators consider Iran the main suspect, because the hackers used methods previously used by pro-Iranian groups, but there has not yet been an official FBI conclusion (Eadaily, 2026).

2. Power Supply: Drone Attacks Threaten Grids in Libya and Germany

A drone strike hit the South Zawiya transformation station in western Libya before dawn on Wednesday, sparking a fire that completely destroyed the facility and severed power to vast areas, including large parts of southern Zawiya city (Yeni Safak, 2026; The Peninsula Qatar, 2026). The station, which lies roughly 40 kilometres west of Tripoli, was knocked out of service, and no group has claimed responsibility (Yeni Safak, 2026).

Libya’s General Electricity Company (GECOL) said the 30/11 kV substation south of Zawiya was targeted, causing it to catch fire completely and go out of service, and warned that the loss of additional substations, transmission lines, and other power infrastructure could cause widespread disruptions, “potentially leading to a partial or complete shutdown of the electricity grid” (The Peninsula Qatar, 2026). GECOL also confirmed that the Zawia Power Station was hit by a fibre-optic armed drone, and that General Electric (GE) halted all site operations and withdrew technicians (Libya Herald, 2026).

The attacks compound a fragile national grid: a U.S. firm withdrew its technical crews from the larger 1,300-megawatt Zawiya power plant in June over deteriorating safety conditions, delaying essential maintenance and leaving more than 700 megawatts of capacity offline (Yeni Safak, 2026). That shortfall threatens partial or nationwide blackouts if attacks persist, and all work at the plant has been suspended with personnel evacuated until safe conditions can be guaranteed (Yeni Safak, 2026). The Zawiya Oil Refinery has been hit for the fifth time since Sunday, most recently when an explosive-laden UAV struck the roof of a diesel storage tank and ignited a fire (Yeni Safak, 2026).

In Germany, E.ON chief executive Leonhard Birnbaum warned Wednesday that “the most attractive target” for drone attacks is the extra-high-voltage grid operated by transmission system operators and E.ON’s 110,000-volt network (Yahoo News, 2026b). He called for improvements to security measures but said complete protection is “illusory,” noting that a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was discovered last week at Leipzig/Halle Airport (Yahoo News, 2026b). “We can ensure that it is not easy, but we cannot guarantee that it is impossible to attack us,” Birnbaum said (Yahoo News, 2026b).

What’s Disputed or Unconfirmed

The claim that Iran “successfully attacked 36 water supply systems” is, so far, a single journalist’s assertion, made on air by David Road on the MS NOW TV channel and reported by Eadaily (Eadaily, 2026). The same report notes there has not yet been an official FBI conclusion, and the White House has redirected questions about the investigation to the FBI (Eadaily, 2026). NPR’s own coverage frames the Iran link as an open question: “Are hacks of U.S. water facilities a new front in the Iran war?” (NPR, 2026).

President Trump explicitly rejects Iran’s involvement, instead blaming Minnesota authorities and Governor Tim Walz, whom he called “extremely incompetent” — a position that runs directly against the journalist’s account (Eadaily, 2026). Experts also concede that the attackers could have disguised themselves as Iran (Eadaily, 2026).

In Libya, GECOL confirmed the widely circulated reports and video of the Zawia strikes, while no group has claimed the substation attack (Libya Herald, 2026; Yeni Safak, 2026). The Libya Herald report notes that video confirms the use of fibre-optic drones but does not identify an actor (2026).

Kemetic Minds Analysis

Today’s verified reporting covered: Water Supply; Power Supply. Every claim above traces back to a specific, dated, fetched source — treat the Key Takeaways as the verified factual floor, and the ‘What’s Disputed or Unconfirmed’ section as the honest boundary of what today’s sourcing actually supports versus what’s still allegation or one-sided claim. The two checklists below are static, agency-sourced preparedness guidance (FEMA/Ready.gov/CDC/USDA) and are not tied to today’s specific stories.
