KEMETIC MINDS — BREAKING NEWS
September 05, 2026

The U.S. military said Saturday it struck three Iranian oil tankers — disabling two vessels and destroying a third — after ballistic missiles were launched toward two of its warships in the region [1][2].

Key Facts

  • U.S. Central Command said it “permanently disabled” one tanker near Kharg Island and another near the Strait of Hormuz, and “completely destroyed” an unladen third tanker in the Gulf of Oman [1][2].
  • Centcom said the strikes followed “multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks” on a U.S. aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer, both of which “successfully evaded” the fire with no U.S. personnel hurt [1][2].
  • Iranian state TV reported that four U.S. missiles struck a tanker about 10 kilometres from Kharg Island, home to a terminal through which Iran exports most of its oil [2].
  • Centcom described the three vessels as “part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies” [1].
  • The action came nearly a week after attacks between the two sides resumed following a period of relative calm [1].

Centcom: “If you shoot at two of our ships, we will take out three of yours”

Adm. Brad Cooper, Centcom’s commander, said in a statement Saturday that the strikes were meant to impose a higher price on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. “Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost – taking out three of yours,” Cooper said [1].

“We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet,” he added [1].

Centcom, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, attributed the attacks on the warships to the IRGC. Tehran did not immediately acknowledge any attack on U.S. ships [1].

Renewed fighting after ceasefire expiry

The strikes came one day after President Donald Trump sought to minimize the conflict as “small potatoes” [2]. They keep up a return to fighting after six months of on-again, off-again war that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran on 28 February; Iran responded by attacking Israel, U.S. bases and allied Gulf states, and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz to marine traffic [1][2].

A 60-day ceasefire formally expired last month with little sign of a diplomatic settlement, and both sides have sought to inflict military and economic pain while negotiations have collapsed [1][2]. The conflict over the strait has raised energy prices globally, and Trump is facing pressure over how much the war is costing American consumers ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November [1].

What’s Still Unconfirmed

The U.S. account of the missile exchanges — including which forces fired on the warships and the extent of damage to the two tankers Centcom says were “permanently disabled” — has not been independently confirmed in published reporting [1]. Iranian state media acknowledged before Centcom’s announcement that a tanker had been struck off the coast of Kharg Island, but Tehran had not responded to the U.S. claim that its ships were targeted [1][2].
