KEMETIC MINDS — BREAKING NEWS
August 16, 2026

Adm. Brad Cooper, the top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, visited the USS Lincoln in the Arabian Sea during a 10-day regional tour that concluded Saturday, U.S. Central Command said, as Israel reported strikes in southern Lebanon that killed at least 11 people and a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo for Gaza ceasefire-related talks (see ABC News, 2026).

Key Facts

  • The USS Lincoln arrived in the Middle East in January and has recorded more than 240 days of uninterrupted time at sea, a record-setting deployment supporting the U.S. war against Iran, including the blockade on Iranian ports (ABC News, 2026).
  • Reports have emerged of mental health and supply issues aboard the long-deployed carrier, which can have more than 5,000 sailors and Marines on board (ABC News, 2026).
  • Cooper’s tour also included Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, where he met with civilian and military leaders (ABC News, 2026).
  • Israel’s military said it targeted two Hezbollah commanders in southern Lebanon on Saturday, in the deadliest attacks since a truce between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah went into effect in June (ABC News, 2026).
  • Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state news agency said at least 11 people were killed in the two strikes (ABC News, 2026).

Carrier Visit and Regional Tour

Cooper visited the USS Lincoln in the Arabian Sea as reports have emerged of mental health and supply issues aboard the aircraft carrier. Extended deployments of carriers — which can have more than 5,000 sailors and Marines on board — have raised concerns about the impact not only on the ships but on service members (ABC News, 2026).

“History will record this deployment as one of the most operationally intense and consequential of the modern era,” Cooper said of the Lincoln strike group in a statement released Saturday (ABC News, 2026). Cooper also went to Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to meet with civilian and military leaders, according to the Central Command statement (ABC News, 2026).

Lebanon Strikes and Cairo Talks

Israel’s military said it targeted two Hezbollah commanders in strikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday (ABC News, 2026). Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state news agency said at least 11 people were killed in two strikes — one on a home on the edge of Ansar village where seven people died, and another on the village of Deir al-Zahrani, where four were killed (ABC News, 2026).

Israel’s military said early on Sunday morning that the strike on Deir al-Zahrani killed Abu Hassan Alaa, whom it described as a “senior commander” for Hezbollah who had taken part in attacks against Israel’s soldiers in southern Lebanon as well as led militants who targeted Israeli soldiers and civilians over several years (ABC News, 2026). Earlier, Israel’s military had said the strike on Ansar killed Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan, whom it described as a battalion commander with Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force unit; the military said Haj Hassan’s family was with him, but emphasized that the family was not targeted (ABC News, 2026).

A Hamas delegation is in Cairo on Sunday for Gaza ceasefire-related talks with Egyptian officials (ABC News, 2026).

What’s Still Unconfirmed

The death toll in the Lebanon strikes is attributed to Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state news agency, and the identities of the two commanders killed are reported by Israel’s military; the source text does not include a response from Hezbollah or Lebanese officials confirming the commanders’ deaths, the family’s presence, or the full account of the strikes (ABC News, 2026).
