Missing person found dead near Signal Mountain waterfall, HCSO says.
A missing person from Virginia was found dead at the bottom of a waterfall Thursday morning after authorities located their vehicle on a Signal Mountain trail.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the 900 block of Falling Water Trail Wednesday night after someone reported a suspicious vehicle. Deputies determined the vehicle belonged to a missing person from Norfolk, Virginia, and began searching the area.
The search was suspended overnight because of darkness and safety concerns. Search crews returned October 8, and found the person deceased at the bottom of a waterfall.
The person’s identity is being withheld until family members are notified.
Several agencies assisted in the recovery operation, including Hamilton County STARS, the Hamilton County Cliff and Cave Rescue Team, Hamilton County EMS, the Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office, Tennessee State Park Rangers, and Walden’s Ridge Fire Rescue.
HCSO says the information remains preliminary and no further details are available.[1]

About the Strange Fruit Series
“Strange Fruit” is the title of a 1939 protest song, first written as a poem by Abel Meeropol and recorded by Billie Holiday, about lynchings in the American South. This series documents strange American hangings, individuals found under suspicious circumstances, missing persons cases, and under-reported deaths that have received little to no national media attention. Each report includes an automated Media Breadth Audit measuring how many news outlets documented the case. A story appearing here reflects public law enforcement and local reporting; we report what officials and families state, what remains unconfirmed, and direct links to verify the primary reporting.
