Civil Rights Watch — Daily Update — September 11, 2026

Manhattan prosecutors have charged a 51-year-old man with hate crimes in two daylight stabbings near Upper West Side synagogues.

The indictment, announced this week, lands as FBI data shows reported antisemitic hate crimes fell in 2025 but remain near the highest levels the bureau has ever recorded. Here is what the official documents say — and what they do not.

  • Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced a hate crime indictment against 51-year-old Raul Morales over two July 23 stabbings near synagogues on the Upper West Side (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).
  • Morales faces several counts, including second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime (UA.NEWS, 2026).
  • Prosecutors say he shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the first attack and stabbed a second man in the chest with a screwdriver (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).
  • FBI data released in August shows antisemitic hate crimes fell from 1,938 incidents in 2024 to 1,528 in 2025 — still the third-highest yearly total the bureau has recorded (Heritagefl, 2026).
  • A Jewish American was about 190 percent likelier than a Muslim American to be the target of a hate crime in 2025, according to analyst Ayal Feinberg (Heritagefl, 2026).

1. Bragg Files Hate Crime Indictment in Two Upper West Side Stabbings

Bragg announced the hate crime indictment against Morales on Tuesday, following an investigation into two unprovoked daytime stabbings (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

The attacks happened on July 23. The indictment came roughly seven weeks later.

What prosecutors say happened on July 23

Both attacks took place in broad daylight, near synagogues, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

  • Near West 84th Street and Central Park West, prosecutors say Morales approached a 57-year-old man from behind and stabbed him in the back with a knife while shouting “Allahu Akbar” and other expressions (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).
  • Minutes later, near a second synagogue close to West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, he allegedly attacked a 50-year-old Jewish man wearing a kippah and stabbed him in the chest with a screwdriver (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

Both victims survived. The first required emergency surgery to remove a knife still lodged in his back (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

Police tracked Morales to a nearby apartment, where he eventually surrendered, according to the account in court filings. Search warrants executed on his phone uncovered text messages containing explicit antisemitic sentiments, prosecutors said (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

What the officials said

“Raul Morales was allegedly motivated by antisemitism when he attacked two New Yorkers in broad daylight near two Upper West Side synagogues,” Bragg said in a statement (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

Bragg called the case “a prime example of how hate crimes make all of us less safe” (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department “responded quickly, identified the suspect, and took him into custody that same afternoon” (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

She said the NYPD “will continue to do” that work “in response to antisemitic hate crimes and hate crimes of any kind” (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

Why the case matters beyond one defendant

The indictment arrives against a national backdrop that has barely improved. FBI data released in August shows antisemitic hate crimes fell from 1,938 incidents in 2024 to 1,528 in 2025 (Heritagefl, 2026).

Overall hate crimes declined 7 percent over the same period (Heritagefl, 2026).

Even so, 2025 produced the third-highest number of antisemitic hate crimes the bureau has ever recorded. That total is 36 percent higher than the 1,100 incidents in 2022 (Heritagefl, 2026).

Feinberg, associate professor of political science and antisemitism studies at Gratz College, called 2022 “an extraordinarily bad year at the time” (Heritagefl, 2026).

“I would describe 2025 as kind of a retreat from the post-Oct. 7 peak but certainly not a return to pre-crisis environment,” he said (Heritagefl, 2026).

He compared the pattern to hate crimes targeting Muslims before and after the 9/11 attacks: “You see a spike, a small decline and then a plateau, and that’s the environment that we’re in now” (Heritagefl, 2026).

In 2025, anti-Jewish incidents “outnumbered hate crimes against every other religion combined,” running 7.5 times higher than anti-Muslim hate crimes and 8.6 times higher than anti-Sikh hate crimes, according to Feinberg (Heritagefl, 2026).

A Jewish American was about 190 percent likelier than a Muslim American to be the target of a hate crime that year, he said (Heritagefl, 2026).

His explanation is blunt: “antisemitism is becoming more normalized in this country” (Heritagefl, 2026).

He also warned that once someone commits a violent hate crime, “you’re far more likely to engage in that kind of behavior moving forward” (Heritagefl, 2026).

That plateau is the broader pattern we’ve followed in Rise in Hate Crimes and Erosion of Voting Rights: A Threat to Black America — one bad year stacking on another, not a spike that recedes.

The open question is whether the 2025 dip holds. The FBI figures cover 2024 and 2025; no newer national totals appear in the data cited here (Heritagefl, 2026).

What’s Disputed or Unconfirmed

Everything charged against Morales is an allegation. He has been indicted, not convicted, and no trial outcome has been reported in the sources reviewed (UA.NEWS, 2026).

The account of the attacks — including the phrase prosecutors say he shouted and the antisemitic text messages on his phone — comes entirely from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the NYPD. No defense response appears in the material reviewed (The Jerusalem Post, 2026).

The antisemitism statistics come from Feinberg’s analysis of FBI data as reported by JNS; the underlying FBI tables were not reproduced in the source text (Heritagefl, 2026).

We found no independently verified account of the July 23 attacks beyond official statements, and no confirmation of which specific counts beyond second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime the indictment contains.

How to Verify This Yourself

  • Read the charging announcement directly through the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office press releases, and check the NYPD newsroom for the department’s own statement.
  • Pull the national numbers yourself from the FBI hate crime statistics portal to compare the 2024 and 2025 totals Feinberg cites.
  • Track the case’s procedural status through the New York State Unified Court System’s WebCivil search, where filings and appearance dates are public records.

Kemetic Minds Analysis

Today’s verified reporting covered: Hate Crimes. Every claim above traces back to a specific, dated, fetched source — treat the Key Takeaways as the verified factual floor, and the ‘What’s Disputed or Unconfirmed’ section as the honest boundary of what today’s sourcing actually supports versus what’s still allegation or one-sided claim.

Investigative Methodology: This roundup is generated once daily at 6:00 PM America/Chicago from live news sources published within the prior 24 hours, plus primary-source civil-rights monitoring feeds (SPLC, ADL, ProPublica). Every claim is grounded in fetched source text with an APA7 in-text citation; nothing is written from the model’s general knowledge. Every video embed is verified to be a real, existing video via YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint before publication — none are written by the drafting model. Pull-quotes are extracted verbatim from the cited article, never composed. No Wikipedia sources are used, and social-media posts (TikTok/X/Instagram) are only referenced when a real, working link to that post appears directly in a cited news source — this post does not auto-embed unverified social content, since a fabricated post link would be worse than no embed at all.
