Sudan steps up security for Egyptian trucks after deadly shooting.
Sudanese forces have pledged to provide enhanced security for Egyptian trucks travelling along commercial routes, in an effort to contain the fallout from the shooting deaths of Egyptian truck drivers in the capital, Khartoum, and prevent tensions between the two countries from escalating.
The attack came amid anger in Sudan over an airstrike that targeted workers at mining sites near the Egyptian border.
The Sudanese National Guard’s Shield of the North command announced, through its Department of Security and Protection of National Highways, that it was ready to secure Egyptian trucks, their cargoes and drivers along the northern export route, from the border crossing to the end of Northern State.
The force said it had deployed fixed and mobile patrols, rapid-response units and a round-the-clock operations room to monitor transport movements and respond to emergency reports.
It urged drivers to follow instructions from personnel stationed at checkpoints and contact the operations room in the event of an emergency.
The measures, it said, were intended to ensure the safety of those travelling through the area and resume road transport operations, which had been disrupted following the incident.
On October 12, an armed man opened fire on a group of Egyptian truck drivers at a market in southern Khartoum, killing two and injuring a third. Cairo said Sudanese authorities had arrested the suspect.[1]
