Warplanes bombed an open-pit gold mine in northern Sudan on October 10, killing at least 72 artisanal miners, a Sudanese rights group said, blaming the Egyptian air force for the second such strike at the remote site this year.

The group, Emergency Lawyers, said the strike hit the Jabal al-Uqaydat area in Sudan’s Red Sea State, hundreds of miles from the front lines of the country’s civil war.

Egypt has not claimed responsibility for the attack, while its military said it was conducting an operation against illegal gold prospecting near the border; Egypt did not directly address the specific strike. A Disputed Toll and Egyptian Munitions Accounts of the death toll varied widely.
