Nipah virus was identified by WHO in 2017 as a priority pathogen under the Research and Development (R&D) Blueprint because of its high public health importance and the urgent need to accelerate the development of medical countermeasures (MCMs).[1]
Key Facts
- Disease: Nipah Virus
- Where: India
- Status: Reported by World Health Organization (WHO). Officials describe it as suspected or unconfirmed[1]
- Outlets reporting: 15
- Official source: World Health Organization (WHO)
The Threat
Although Nipah virus infection continues to be associated with high case fatality ratios, the ability to accurately predict which patients are at greatest risk of severe disease and poor outcomes remains limited.[1]
Standardised and validated disease severity scores could help address this challenge.
. The NiVOTriPP project was initiated to develop a scenario-specific, flexible, and adaptive clinical trial protocol for evaluation of Nipah vaccine efficacy (VE) in case of a potentially large outbreak (i.e., Nipah-X).[1]
While the current epidemiology of Nipah virus disease makes it practically infeasible to evaluate VE, any change in epidemiology leading to larger outbreaks may allow conduct of such trials.[1]
Transmission Method
The reports do not yet say how the people in this outbreak were infected.
How Nipah virus spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Nipah virus reaches people through direct contact with infected bats, pigs or horses, and through fruit or raw date palm juice contaminated by fruit bats. It also spreads between people through close contact, among family members, caregivers and in hospitals.[2]
Affected Regions
Places named in the reports: India.
What Is Not Confirmed
- The drug, whose packaging reportedly carried the label ‘For clinical trial’, had reached the hospital through KMSCL.[1]
Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook
There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure Nipah virus. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for Nipah virus. Early intensive supportive care can improve survival. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.
The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:
- Boil freshly collected date palm juice, and wash and peel fruit before eating it.
- Wear gloves and protective clothing when handling sick animals.
- Avoid unprotected close contact with people infected with Nipah.
What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.
The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.
What Onmanorama Reports
Thiruvananthapuram: Nipah patients in Kerala were administered expired medication in previous years, Health Minister K Muraleedharan told the Assembly on Thursday. The government will constitute a medical board headed by Dr R Aravind, head of the Infectious Diseases department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, to investigate the use of the expired drug.[3]
