An ongoing measles outbreak in Pennsylvania has quickly become the largest and deadliest in the United States in more than 30 years.[1]
Key Facts
- Disease: Measles
- Where: United States
- Status: Reported by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (.gov). Officials describe it as suspected or unconfirmed[2]

The Threat
Historical data suggests that 1 to 3 people will die out of every 1,000 unvaccinated people who contract measles.[1]
But Pennsylvania has reported five measles-associated deaths — with a sixth under review — out of about 1,300 total reported cases since the start of the outbreak in April.[1]
This puts the measles death rate in Pennsylvania at least 1.5 times higher than average — and possibly up to 5 times higher. It’s not likely that the measles virus has changed.[1]
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (.gov) says: Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) today announced that 1,338 measles cases have been confirmed across 44 counties in Pennsylvania so far in 2026. DOH continues to lead Pennsylvania’s robust response to the ongoing measles outbreak and is making the most up-to-date information on cases, hospitalizations, and deaths available on our measles dashboard.[2]
Transmission Method
What the reports say about exposure and spread: “There clearly is a shift — not in the biology but a shift in the epidemiology that we’re seeing here in Pennsylvania,” said Dr. Matthew Ferrari, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State University. “Most people have been exposed to measles or have been vaccinated against measles by the time they reach reproductive age.”[1]
How measles spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Measles is a highly contagious virus. It spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes.[3]
Affected Regions
Places named in the reports: Pennsylvania, United States, Colorado, Texas.
- Measles Symptoms and Transmission Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious short- and long-term health problems including pneumonia and brain swelling, with nearly 20 percent of people identified by DOH with measles being hospitalized.[2]
- Death from measles, though rare, occurs in one to three patients per 1,000 cases.[2]
Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook
There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure measles. Vaccination is the best way to prevent measles and to stop it spreading to others. WHO recommends two doses of the vaccine to make sure a child is immune. Unvaccinated young children and pregnant people face the highest risk of severe complications. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.
The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:
- Make sure every child in your home has had both doses of the measles vaccine.
- Ask a clinician about vaccination if you are not sure you are immune.
What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.
The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.
