Ghana should get hospitals, isolation sites and response money ready for Ebola now, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) says, after the Bundibugyo strain was detected in Nigeria.[1]

Key Facts

  • Disease: Ebola
  • Where: Nigeria
  • Status: Reported by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)[2]
  • Outlets reporting: 5
  • Official source: European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)

The Threat

At a press conference closing the GMA’s 68th Annual General Conference on Sunday, its President, Professor Ernest Yorke, said Ghana must prepare its health facilities and emergency teams before any case crosses its borders.[1]

“The threats of Ebola virus disease, in particular the Bundibugyo strain, which has spread rapidly in Central and East Africa with very high mortality, are now imminent with the detection of the virus in our sister country, Nigeria,” Yorke said.[1]

He commended initial steps by the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to monitor travellers at ports of entry and brief health workers, but said wider readiness across hospitals and districts was still required.[1]

Nigeria’s only confirmed case is a Swiss woman who had travelled to Uganda before returning to Abuja, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).[1]

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) says: Cases were also reported in Kenya and Nigeria in October 2026 and have been reported in Uganda, where the outbreak has ended. Key facts – As of 5 November 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where community transmission is ongoing, has reported a total of 10 741 confirmed cases, including 5 230 related deaths (from data up until 4 November).[2]

Transmission Method

What the reports say about exposure and spread: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Bundibugyo virus disease is a severe viral illness transmitted through direct contact with the blood, secretions or bodily fluids of an infected person or someone who has died from the disease, or with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms appear between two and 21 days after exposure and begin suddenly with high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and general weakness, followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rash, impaired organ function and, in some cases, unexplained bleeding.[1]

How Ebola spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Fruit bats are thought to be Ebola's natural hosts. The virus reaches people through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected animals, then spreads between people through direct contact with the body fluids of the sick. People cannot pass it on before they have symptoms. Health workers without strict infection control, and burials that involve touching the body, have often spread it.[3]

Affected Regions

Places named in the reports: Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Germany, France, United Kingdom.

  • She and her husband were evacuated to Switzerland on October 26, and two later suspected cases in Nigeria tested negative.[1]
  • Since the beginning of the outbreak, eight provinces have been affected: Ituri, Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu, Tshopo, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, Sud Ubangi and Nord Ubangi. – On 20 October 2026, an Ebola case was reported in Nigeria.[2]
  • As of 4 November, 62 contacts of the case had been identified and were under follow-up. – As of 26 October 2026, a total of nine confirmed cases, including two deaths, have been reported in Kenya, all linked to the first case.[2]

What Is Not Confirmed

  • The Association also advised the public to avoid physical contact with people suspected or confirmed to have Ebola, dead bodies of infected persons, and objects that may have been contaminated.[1]

Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook

There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure Ebola. Early intensive supportive care, including rehydration and treating symptoms, improves survival. Approved vaccines (such as Ervebo) and antibody treatments exist only for Ebola virus disease. There is no approved vaccine or treatment for Sudan or Bundibugyo virus disease; candidates are being tested. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.

The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:

  • Avoid close contact with sick people and with their blood and body fluids.
  • Choose a safe and dignified burial; do not touch the body of someone who died of Ebola.
  • Avoid contact with wild animals found sick or dead, such as fruit bats and monkeys.

What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.

The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.

What MyJoyOnline Reports

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has urged the government to intensify preparations against a possible Ebola outbreak following the reported detection of the Bundibugyo strain of the virus in neighbouring Nigeria. The Association says Ghana must strengthen its disease surveillance and emergency response systems to prevent a potential outbreak and ensure that health facilities are adequately prepared to manage suspected cases.[4]
