The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Mr Jide Idris, has said the N10 billion emergency intervention fund approved by the federal government was intended to strengthen preparedness for Ebola and other endemic diseases, including Lassa fever.[1]

Key Facts

  • Disease: Ebola
  • Where: Nigeria
  • Status: Reported by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control[2]
  • Outlets reporting: 17
  • Official source: European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

The Threat

Mr Idris disclosed this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, amid questions over the utilisation of the fund approved by President Bola Tinubu for public health preparedness.[1]

“The money was requested not only for Ebola, but to address issues of control of other endemic diseases,” he said.[1]

He explained that several measures required to control Ebola, Lassa fever and other diseases involve similar activities, including surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, screening and monitoring at points of entry.[1]

According to him, the Ebola outbreak increased the need to deploy the funding towards preparedness and response activities, including the purchase of personal protective equipment, laboratory supplies, fuel and other operational requirements.[1]

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control says: Cases were also reported in Kenya and Nigeria in October 2026 and have been reported in Uganda, where the outbreak has ended. Key facts – On 20 October 2026, an Ebola case was reported in Nigeria.[2]

Transmission Method

The reports do not yet say how the people in this outbreak were infected.

How Ebola spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Fruit bats are thought to be Ebola's natural hosts. The virus reaches people through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected animals, then spreads between people through direct contact with the body fluids of the sick. People cannot pass it on before they have symptoms. Health workers without strict infection control, and burials that involve touching the body, have often spread it.[3]

Affected Regions

Places named in the reports: Nigeria, Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Germany, France, United Kingdom.

  • As of Monday, 54 primary contacts had been identified, including an Uber driver who transported the index patient to her first hospital.[1]
  • Contact are being followed up and further epidemiological investigations are ongoing. – As of 26 October, in Kenya, a total of nine confirmed cases, including two deaths, have been reported, all linked to the first case.[2]
  • The last case was reported on 20 October 2026 (close contact of the first case) and the second death on 23 October 2026. – As of 26 October 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where community transmission is ongoing, has reported a total of 10 060 confirmed cases, including 4 887 related deaths (from data up until 25 October).[2]

What Is Not Confirmed

  • However, he said they were not excluding any options, including that there may have been indirect contact through another person, for example.[1]

Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook

There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure Ebola. Early intensive supportive care, including rehydration and treating symptoms, improves survival. Approved vaccines (such as Ervebo) and antibody treatments exist only for Ebola virus disease. There is no approved vaccine or treatment for Sudan or Bundibugyo virus disease; candidates are being tested. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.

The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:

  • Avoid close contact with sick people and with their blood and body fluids.
  • Choose a safe and dignified burial; do not touch the body of someone who died of Ebola.
  • Avoid contact with wild animals found sick or dead, such as fruit bats and monkeys.

What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.

The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.

What The Hindu Reports

A team of leading Ebola scientists will travel to Nigeria to help investigate how the country’s first patient in more than a decade got infected, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said. Their task will involve trying to work out how the female patient, the Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja, caught the Bundibugyo species of Ebola.[4]
