Global Outbreak Tracker · Nigeria · Published October 27, 2026, 8:29 AM CDT

A team of leading Ebola scientists will travel to Nigeria to help investigate how the country’s first patient in more than a decade got infected, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said.[1]

Key Facts

  • Disease: Ebola
  • Where: Nigeria
  • Status: Reported by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control[2]
  • Outlets reporting: 19
  • Official source: European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

The Threat

Their task will involve trying to work out how the female patient, the Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja, caught the Bundibugyo species of Ebola.[1]

Her travel documents show she had not visited the outbreak epicentre in Democratic Republic of Congo, Kaseya said in an interview with Reuters in London.[1]

Finding out how she became ill matters to ensure that the deadly Bundibugyo outbreak, already the second-largest Ebola epidemic on record, is not spreading silently in as-yet undiscovered locations, and to help trace and isolate all contacts.[1]

“I’m bringing a group of scientists in Abuja because… we need to be led by science.”
One of the theories the scientists will investigate is a potential link between the patient in Nigeria and the first case in Kenya, reported earlier this month in a man who had travelled from Congo.[1]

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control says: Cases were also reported in Kenya and Nigeria in October 2026 and have been reported in Uganda, where the outbreak has ended. Key facts – On 20 October 2026, an Ebola case was reported in Nigeria.[2]

Transmission Method

What the reports say about exposure and spread: Ebola spreads through close contact with the infected bodily fluids of a person with symptoms, according to the World Health Organization. The Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in Congo has now caused almost 10,000 cases and more than 4,600 deaths in Congo, and spread to three other countries in Africa – Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.[1]

How Ebola spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Fruit bats are thought to be Ebola's natural hosts. The virus reaches people through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected animals, then spreads between people through direct contact with the body fluids of the sick. People cannot pass it on before they have symptoms. Health workers without strict infection control, and burials that involve touching the body, have often spread it.[3]

Affected Regions

Places named in the reports: Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Kenya, Germany, France, United Kingdom.

  • On Friday, genomic sequencing showed that the viruses that infected the two patients were closely related.[1]
  • Kaseya said while genomic sequencing had shown that the viruses were similar, it did not mean that one of the patients had directly infected the other and the patient in Abuja, whose condition is improving, has said she does not remember meeting the Kenya patient.[1]
  • A total of 53 contacts have been identified to date, and further epidemiological investigations are ongoing. – As of 25 October, in Kenya, a total of nine confirmed cases, including two deaths, have been reported, all linked to the first case.[2]
  • The last case was reported on 20 October 2026 (close contact of the first case) and the second death on 23 October 2026. – As of 25 October 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported a total of 9 964 confirmed cases, including 4 851 related deaths (from data up until 24 October).[2]

What Is Not Confirmed

  • However, he said they were not excluding any options, including that there may have been indirect contact through another person, for example.[1]

Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook

There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure Ebola. Early intensive supportive care, including rehydration and treating symptoms, improves survival. Approved vaccines (such as Ervebo) and antibody treatments exist only for Ebola virus disease. There is no approved vaccine or treatment for Sudan or Bundibugyo virus disease; candidates are being tested. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.

The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:

  • Avoid close contact with sick people and with their blood and body fluids.
  • Choose a safe and dignified burial; do not touch the body of someone who died of Ebola.
  • Avoid contact with wild animals found sick or dead, such as fruit bats and monkeys.

What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.

The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.

What Arise News Reports

The federal government on Monday expressed optimism that Nigeria could declare an end to the Ebola outbreak by December 7, provided no further confirmed or probable cases are detected, as the country’s index patient was evacuated abroad by air ambulance. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, who disclosed this, said the proposed date remained provisional and would depend on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) validating the required 42-day countdown.[4]
