Global Outbreak Tracker · Florida · Published October 23, 2026, 2:09 PM CDT

The number of dengue fever cases in Florida continues to rise, as the state experiences its worst outbreak of the illness in nearly a century despite efforts to prevent its spread and control the mosquito population.[1]

Key Facts

  • Disease: Dengue
  • Where: Florida
  • Status: Reported by Hillsborough County (.gov)[2]
  • Outlets reporting: 4
  • Official source: Hillsborough County (.gov)
  • CDC travel notice: Level 1 – Global Dengue (October 2, 2026)

The Threat

The state also saw its first dengue death in nearly a century when an elderly woman died from the disease in September.[1]

There have been 745 cases reported across the state this year, the vast majority of them in the Tampa Bay area, according to the Florida Department of Health’s most recent Florida Arbovirus Surveillance report for Oct. 11-17.[1]

Of these cases, 425 were locally acquired, the majority in Hillsborough County, where 346 cases have been recorded, the report said. This marks a significant jump in cases from the previous report, dated Oct. 4-10, which recorded 368 total locally acquired cases.[1]

Transmission Method

What the reports say about exposure and spread: But in the continental U.S., Florida usually gets the most locally transmitted cases. The state’s previous worst year was 2023, when just under 200 locally spread cases were reported.[1]

How dengue spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Dengue spreads to people through the bite of infected mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.[3]

Affected Regions

Places named in the reports: Florida, Cuba.

Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook

There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure dengue. There is no specific treatment for dengue. Pain can be managed with paracetamol (acetaminophen); ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided because they raise the risk of bleeding. Early medical care greatly lowers deaths from severe dengue. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.

The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:

  • Avoid mosquito bites, especially during the day.
  • Get rid of standing water where mosquitoes breed.

What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.

The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.

What FOX 13 Tampa Bay Reports

TAMPA, Fla. – USF researchers are using high-tech tools to help fight the dengue fever outbreak in Tampa Bay, working with the Florida Department of Health to find and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds before the insects have a chance to multiply. The effort takes a more targeted approach than traditional mosquito spraying, which can cover broad areas from the air and the ground.[4]
