KEMETIC MINDS — BREAKING NEWS
September 14, 2026

Satellite maker Open Cosmos raised 300 million euros ($346 million) in a round announced Monday[1][2], leading a burst of European space funding as startups and governments look for alternatives to U.S. companies such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX[2].

Key Facts

  • Open Cosmos confirmed the €300 million ($346 million) round in its own announcement, led by Lightrock and ETF Partners with participation from Institut Català de Finances, Entrepreneurs First, the UK’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund and two international pension funds[1].
  • CEO Rafel Jordà Siquier said: “Space infrastructure is becoming as critical as energy, digital networks and transport”[1].
  • The company says it has signed more than $370 million in customer contracts over the past three and a half years and has posted five consecutive years of profitable growth, manufacturing roughly one satellite a day across four European factories[1].
  • Its workforce across its UK, Spain, Portugal and Greece sites is close to 400 people[3].
  • The Exploration Company announced a $450 million Series C. Spanish rocket company PLD Space added 108 million euros to its Series C, taking that round to 288 million euros[2].
  • German rocket startup HyImpulse raised more than 50 million euros in new equity through an extension of its Series A. Marlan Space and Loft Orbital announced a $1 billion program to build a 50-satellite AI-enabled constellation with partners including French AI firm Mistral[2].
  • The OECD estimates that 67% of recipients of private space investment in 2025 were U.S.-based, compared with 12.8% in Europe[2].
  • The U.S. public space budget stood at around $77 billion in 2024, according to the Space Foundation, which the European Space Policy Institute estimated was roughly five times Europe’s[2].

What Open Cosmos Plans To Do With The Money

Open Cosmos said the oversubscribed round will fund satellite infrastructure, connectivity and real-time intelligence for Europe, scaling its ConnectedCosmos, OpenConstellation and DataCosmos service lines and growing engineering, manufacturing and software teams across its four factories[1][2].

Jordà said the company is raising more capital because of the number of opportunities in space, even though it has been profitable for five consecutive years[2].

Lightrock partner Ashish Puri said Open Cosmos has “the potential to become one of Europe’s defining infrastructure companies”[1].

“There need to be multiple companies, and they will be emerging from everywhere, from the U.S., from Europe, from China, from all over the place,” he told CNBC. “It’s very unlikely that a single company can serve all of that global growth”[2].

The gap the money is chasing

Europe’s share of private space investment trails the United States by a wide margin. The OECD pegs U.S.-based recipients at 67% of that investment in 2025, against 12.8% for Europe[2].

On public spending, the U.S. budget was about $77 billion in 2024, which the European Space Policy Institute estimated was roughly five times Europe’s[2].

ESPI’s own 2024 investment analysis found European space startups pulled in a record 1.5 billion euros ($1.7 billion) that year, a 54% jump from 2023 and the largest single-year increase since 2014, with companies targeting defense and security applications accounting for a record 40% of that total[4]. Historically, European investors have funded early-stage startups but rarely led growth-stage rounds the size of Open Cosmos’s — in 2025 no European private investor led a single growth-stage round on its own, a gap this deal and The Exploration Company’s Series C both break from[5].

U.S.-based rocket startup Stoke Space raised $1 billion earlier this month to accelerate development of its reusable Nova launch vehicle[2].

A First For European Launch, And More Orders For Arianespace

Earlier this month, German startup Isar Aerospace became the first commercial European company to put satellites into orbit[2]. The company raised 270 million euros in June to scale production and expand its launch network[2].

Europe has increased its launch cadence in 2026[2].

Amazon Leo ordered an additional six launches from Europe’s Arianespace[2].

What that added capacity means for satellite builders and their customers — and whether Europe’s funding totals move closer to the U.S. share in 2026 data — will not be clear until the next set of figures is published.

What’s Still Unconfirmed

The reporting does not give Open Cosmos’s post-money valuation or the individual size of each investor’s stake, and does not list the terms attached to the raise. It also does not say how many new jobs the round will directly fund beyond the existing roughly 400-person team, or a firm timeline for deploying the new capital. The OECD investment share covers 2025, and no 2026 comparison figure is given. ESPI’s record-investment figures cover 2024, the most recent full year in its published analysis.
