Mount Etna in Sicily erupted Monday morning, prompting Catania Airport to suspend flights until 4 p.m. after an intense emission of volcanic ash [1].

A swarm of dozens of small earthquakes shook Southern California over the weekend, a magnitude-4.0 quake struck Hawaii’s Big Island, and a sinkhole on the Malibu coast forced residents out of 31 homes.

  • Mount Etna erupted Monday morning; Catania Airport suspended flights until 4 p.m. [1].
  • A swarm of small earthquakes rattled parts of Southern California from Friday night into Saturday, concentrated around Lennox and Westmont [1].
  • A magnitude-4.0 earthquake struck about 2 miles south of Pahala, Hawaii, on Sunday at 8 a.m., drawing more than 56 felt reports in the first half-hour [2].
  • A sinkhole on Malibu’s Sea Level Drive, blamed on coastal flooding from Marie, led to 31 red-tagged properties and evacuations [3].
  • A mass fish die-off was discovered in the Irpin River near Stoyanka, Ukraine, on Sept. 13; the cause is not yet known [4].
  • No new sardine deaths have been reported in South Africa since Sept. 3 [5].

1. Sicily: Etna Ash Shuts Down Catania Airport

Mount Etna erupted on Monday morning, sending up a large cloud of smoke and lava, according to coverage aggregated by MSN (MSN, 2026).

The eruption’s intense ash emission led Catania Airport to suspend flights until 4 p.m. that day [1].

What this means for travelers

Catania sits directly beneath Etna, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, so airport shutdowns during eruptions are a recurring disruption for the region’s air traffic.

The reported suspension covers flights only until 4 p.m. — whether that hold is extended depends on how long the ash continues.

2. Southern California: Dozens of Small Quakes in One Day

A swarm of small earthquakes rattled parts of Southern California from Friday night into Saturday, with activity concentrated around Lennox and Westmont (MSN, 2026).

The reports describe dozens of small quakes within a single day’s span. Quake swarms are clusters of many small events in a limited area over a short period, rather than one main shock followed by aftershocks.

What is not yet known

The available coverage does not report magnitudes for individual quakes in the swarm, nor any damage, injuries, or statements from seismic agencies about what caused the cluster.

Lennox and Westmont sit in the dense Los Angeles basin, where even small quakes are widely felt. Whether the swarm has subsided will show up in monitoring data before it shows up in headlines.

3. Hawaii: Magnitude-4.0 Quake South of Pahala

A magnitude-4.0 earthquake struck south of Pahala on Sunday morning at 8 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (Staradvertiser, 2026).

The quake hit about 2 miles south of Pahala at a depth of 8 miles below sea level. More than 56 felt reports were recorded within the first half-hour, and light shaking was reported across the island.

  • The earthquake is not expected to cause damage to buildings or infrastructure [2].
  • There was no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes [2].
  • Aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks [2].

Why Pahala keeps shaking

The quake occurred near the long-term seismic swarm beneath the Pahala area that has been ongoing since 2019 [2]. Earthquakes in the region have been documented as far back as the 1960s.

For residents, the practical takeaway is that shaking of this size is a known feature of the area’s deep seismic activity — and that the observatory continues to monitor the state’s volcanoes for changes.

4. Malibu: Sinkhole Red-Tags 31 Properties

A massive sinkhole opened under a home on Malibu’s Sea Level Drive during the early morning hours of Sept. 8, 2026, according to the Associated Press (Yahoo, 2026).

AP attributed the collapse to coastal flooding caused by Marie. The downgraded hurricane was a post-tropical cyclone when it passed Southern California, but it still brought churning waves that battered the vulnerable coastline.

The numbers so far

  • 31 properties were red-tagged as of Sept. 8, and evacuations were ordered [3].
  • SoCalGas shut off service after detecting a gas leak; Waterworks District 29 shut off water to avoid potential water main breaks [3].
  • The homeowners association expects repairs to take about five weeks, depending on weather conditions [3].
  • The American Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at Malibu High School [3].

The City of Malibu issued an Emergency Proclamation and ordered the immediate evacuation of Sea Level Drive. MarketWatch reported that the sinkhole is still threatening a $10.5 million Malibu mansion (MarketWatch, 2026).

AP reported that Nicolas Cage is rumored to own the home and was believed to have purchased the property in 2024; he has not released a statement about it [3].

What happens next

Residents are out of their homes for at least the length of the repair schedule, and access for emergency responders remains limited while the driveway and part of the road are collapsed.

5. Ukraine: Mass Fish Die-Off in the Irpin River

A mass fish die-off was discovered in the Irpin River near the village of Stoyanka, in the Kyiv region, according to UA.NEWS (UA.NEWS, 2026).

Local residents noticed the dead fish on Sunday, September 13. The causes of the sudden die-off are currently unknown.

Experts plan to collect water samples and conduct laboratory tests to determine the exact cause, and are working to establish whether the deaths are linked to water pollution or other factors (UA.NEWS, 2026; Межа, 2026).

What residents are being told

People in the surrounding areas are urged to temporarily refrain from fishing or consuming fish from this section of the river until the investigation results are known [4].

Until the lab results come back, the river remains under suspicion without a confirmed cause.

6. South Africa: Sardine Deaths Hold Steady

No new sardine deaths have been reported since Sept. 3, as monitoring continues (novanews.co.za, 2026).

The available report does not state a total death count, a location, or a confirmed cause. What it does establish is a break in the timeline: nine consecutive days with no new deaths reported.

Monitoring is ongoing, so the pause is a data point, not a conclusion.

7. Kilauea: Remembering the 1919–1920 Maunaiki Eruption

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory’s weekly Volcano Watch column looked back at the Maunaiki eruption of Kilauea, which formed a prominent shield over eight months, from December 1919 to August 1920 (Mauinow, 2026).

At the time, the observatory was still relatively new, having started operations in 1912. Dr. Thomas Jaggar and Ruy Finch were the two observatory geologists tasked with monitoring volcanic activity.

The run-up to the eruption

A persistent, long-lived lava lake occupied Halemaʻumaʻu at Kilauea’s summit before the eruption began. On Nov. 28, 1919, that lava lake drained by more than 600 feet over four hours, and it took 17 days for Halemaʻumaʻu to refill.

The column also points hikers to the Footprints Trail near Highway 11, where footprints are still visible from Native Hawaiians who walked in wet ash that fell during an explosive eruption in 1790.

What Scientists Are Saying

On Hawaii island, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the magnitude-4.0 Pahala quake was not expected to cause damage and that it saw no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea. The observatory continues to monitor the state’s volcanoes for changes [2].

In Ukraine, experts have not yet named a cause for the Irpin River fish deaths. Their next step is water sampling and laboratory testing, with residents asked to avoid fishing or eating fish from that stretch in the meantime [4].

For the Southern California swarm and the Catania ash suspension, the available coverage does not include agency statements on cause or duration. Those are the open questions to watch.

How To Track These Events

Three public sources publish free, real-time monitoring data that anyone can check.

  • The USGS earthquake map shows global seismic activity in near real time, including swarms and aftershock sequences.
  • NOAA handles weather and space-weather monitoring, including the storm systems behind coastal flooding events.
  • The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program maintains the world’s reference record of volcanic activity, alongside local observatory updates.

For Etna specifically, the Italian observatories tracking the volcano are the fastest source on whether Catania’s flight suspension lifts at 4 p.m. or extends into another day.

This counts detections, not shaking: Alaska and California run far denser sensor networks than most of the world, so they record small quakes that would go unrecorded elsewhere. Regions are USGS’s own place labels, which mix US states with countries.

Kemetic Minds Analysis

“Extreme Earth Changes Watch” exists to track real, agency-verified geophysical and weather events without the hype — every event here is tied to a named source: USGS, NOAA, the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, or mainstream news, rather than an anonymous social post. Earthquakes, volcanic activity, and extreme weather happen somewhere on Earth every single day; this roundup exists to separate genuinely unusual or record-setting activity from routine background activity, using the same scientific sourcing bar every day.

Investigative Methodology: This roundup is generated on a fixed daily schedule (morning, America/Chicago) from live wire sources. Every claim is grounded in fetched source text with a numbered citation, and this series only reports events backed by an official agency (USGS, NOAA, Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program) or mainstream news coverage — never anonymous social-media claims alone. No event is asserted to be connected to another, or framed as prophetic/supernatural, unless a cited scientist or agency source explicitly says so. Every video embed is verified to be a real, existing video via YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint before publication. No Wikipedia sources are used.
