A sinkhole about 25 feet deep opened in Malibu this week, forcing evacuations on a street near a home owned by actor Nicolas Cage. In Texas, a water main break swallowed a pickup truck, and fact-checkers debunked a viral volcano video out of Indonesia.

  • A sinkhole roughly 25 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide opened in front of a Malibu beachside property owned by actor Nicolas Cage, triggering evacuation orders for 31 homes (Los Angeles Times, 2026).
  • Malibu officials said the sinkhole was “caused by coastal erosion from high waves and tides associated with Hurricane Marie” (Los Angeles Times, 2026).
  • Seven homes were red-tagged as hazardous, and 24 more were red-tagged because emergency vehicles could not reach them (Los Angeles Times, 2026).
  • Anak Krakatau erupted in Indonesia on the night of September 4, 2026, but a viral video tied to the event was AI-generated (Vishvas News, 2026).
  • A new study describes a 21.9-million-year-old eruption from Chile’s Lauca Caldera that buried a landscape six times the size of Santiago (Phys.org, 2026).
  • Researchers identified a buried ancient volcano under Norfolk and Lincolnshire, England, that erupted 454.4 million years ago (BBC Science Focus Magazine, 2026).

1. Malibu: A Coastal Sinkhole Forces 31 Homes to Evacuate

Since early Tuesday, a sinkhole in front of a Malibu beachfront property owned by Nicolas Cage grew to about 25 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide, the Los Angeles Times reported.

By the end of the day, most residents on the street had been ordered to evacuate. Seven homes were red-tagged as hazardous, and another 24 were red-tagged because emergency vehicles could not access them (Los Angeles Times, 2026).

Malibu declared a local emergency, issued evacuation orders to 31 homes, and shut off gas in the area, according to Dwell (2026).

What it means for people on the ground

Residents are already looking past the hole to the winter ahead. “We’re looking to have peace and quiet in our lives,” said homeowner Mitchell Leib, 67, whose house was struck by boulders shaken loose by heavy surf. “Not fear.” (Los Angeles Times, 2026).

Not everyone sees a long-term threat. Former Malibu mayor Andy Stern told the Times he believes the sinkhole was a one-off caused by a burst water pipe combined with the waves, rather than a sign of unsolvable problems to come (Los Angeles Times, 2026).

The city said it is preparing for potential strong storms, high surf, heavy rain, mudslides and coastal erosion this winter associated with forecast El Niño conditions (Los Angeles Times, 2026). Whether the collapsed road is repaired before those storms arrive is still unresolved.

2. Texas: Water Main Break Opens Sinkhole at a Whitehouse Intersection

A sinkhole shut down traffic at the intersection of Peggy Drive and Hagan Road in Whitehouse, Texas, after a water main break opened the ground beneath it (KLTV, 2026).

The hole partially swallowed a pickup truck. City water crews have since repaired the broken main, but road repairs are still underway (KLTV, 2026).

There is no word yet on when the intersection will reopen (KLTV, 2026).

3. London: A Small Sinkhole and a Bigger Case of Nerves

In southeast London, a columnist describes a sinkhole outside her home about “the size of a dinner plate” — small, but growing a month after it first appeared (The Independent, 2026).

This is a first-person opinion column, not an agency report. Still, it notes that sinkholes are on the rise around the capital: in February last year, a growing sinkhole caused an entire village in Surrey to evacuate, and in June several holes appeared in roads around Croydon (The Independent, 2026).

The columnist attributes them to broken pipes, heavy rain, or underground erosion in soft rock like chalk (The Independent, 2026).

4. Indonesia: Anak Krakatau Erupted — But a Viral Video Was Not Real

Anak Krakatau erupted on the night of September 4, 2026 (Vishvas News, 2026). A video claiming to show the event spread widely on social media.

Fact-checkers found the footage was AI-generated. Anomalies included parked cars that suddenly moved with no driver visible, and a running person whose legs disappeared into the background (Vishvas News, 2026).

Two independent detection tools rated the video 94% and 97% likely AI-generated, and a partner analysis unit returned a similar result (Vishvas News, 2026).

The eruption itself was real

Four volcanoes, including Anak Krakatau, have indeed erupted in Indonesia, the outlet confirmed (Vishvas News, 2026). A viral post claiming the ash affected about 2,961 flights and 3.41 lakh passengers could not be tied to the verified video.

5. Ancient Volcanoes: Two New Studies Reset the Timeline

Two buried eruptions made news this week, both far older than any human record — and both still reshaping how scientists read the ground beneath us.

Chile’s Lauca Caldera

A colossal sheet of volcanic rock called ignimbrite, erupted from the Lauca Caldera in northern Chile 21.9 million years ago, covered an area six times as large as Chile’s capital, Santiago, reaching one kilometer deep in places (Phys.org, 2026).

Researchers simulated hundreds of possible ancient landscapes to test which could plausibly have been buried. Only relatively low-relief terrain — gentle mountain foothills — fit beneath the deposits (Phys.org, 2026).

From that, the team inferred this part of the Andes was built slowly, with rocks pushed upward no more than 0.26 kilometers every million years — about 2.5 cm, or an inch, every 100 years (Phys.org, 2026). The findings were published in Science Advances (Discover Magazine, 2026).

An ancient volcano under England

Scientists found a buried volcano beneath Norfolk and Lincolnshire that erupted 454.4 million years ago with the force of several thousand hydrogen bombs, blowing ash all the way to Scandinavia (BBC Science Focus Magazine, 2026).

Researchers believe it formed the “Kinnekulle tephra,” an enormous ash bed still found today across Norway, Sweden, the Baltic region, Belarus and Poland (BBC Science Focus Magazine, 2026).

6. Hawaii: A Look Back at Kilauea’s 1919–1920 Maunaiki Eruption

West Hawaii Today published a Volcano Watch retrospective marking the 1919–1920 Maunaiki eruption of Kilauea (West Hawaii Today, 2026). The column looks back at one of the volcano’s earlier eruptive episodes.

What Scientists Are Saying

Study author Byron Adams, a tectonic geomorphologist at University College London, framed the Chilean discovery in plain terms. “Pompeii shows how volcanic eruptions can freeze a moment in human history,” he said. “This study shows that much larger eruptions can also freeze moments in Earth history, burying whole landscapes beneath volcanic deposits and preserving clues to how mountains were being built before the eruption” (Discover Magazine, 2026).

On the English find, lead author Dr. Tim Pharaoh, a geophysicist at the British Geological Survey, said the discovery is “reshaping our understanding of England’s deep geological past” (BBC Science Focus Magazine, 2026).

Co-author Dr. Dan Condon, also of the British Geological Survey, explained the dating method. “Zircon crystals act as tiny natural clocks,” he said, because they incorporate uranium that slowly changes into lead (BBC Science Focus Magazine, 2026).

In Malibu, the city treated the sinkhole as a coastal-erosion event tied to Hurricane Marie’s waves and tides, while also preparing for a forecast El Niño winter (Los Angeles Times, 2026).

How To Track These Events

You do not need a subscription to follow the planet’s restless ground. Three public agencies publish free, real-time monitoring data.

  • The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) tracks earthquakes and volcano activity worldwide. Their earthquake feeds update within minutes of a rupture.
  • NOAA handles weather, ocean, and space-weather monitoring, including the high surf and storm guidance that shaped Malibu’s El Niño preparations.
  • The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program maintains the definitive catalog of eruptions, both current and ancient — the same type of record behind the Kilauea and Anak Krakatau reports above.

For sinkholes, there is no single national watchlist — an important gap. They open quietly, often from a broken pipe or erosion that no agency is tracking block by block.

This counts detections, not shaking: Alaska and California run far denser sensor networks than most of the world, so they record small quakes that would go unrecorded elsewhere. Regions are USGS’s own place labels, which mix US states with countries.

Kemetic Minds Analysis

“Extreme Earth Changes Watch” exists to track real, agency-verified geophysical and weather events without the hype — every event here is tied to a named source: USGS, NOAA, the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, or mainstream news, rather than an anonymous social post. Earthquakes, volcanic activity, and extreme weather happen somewhere on Earth every single day; this roundup exists to separate genuinely unusual or record-setting activity from routine background activity, using the same scientific sourcing bar every day.

Investigative Methodology: This roundup is generated on a fixed daily schedule (morning, America/Chicago) from live wire sources. Every claim is grounded in fetched source text with a numbered citation, and this series only reports events backed by an official agency (USGS, NOAA, Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program) or mainstream news coverage — never anonymous social-media claims alone. No event is asserted to be connected to another, or framed as prophetic/supernatural, unless a cited scientist or agency source explicitly says so. Every video embed is verified to be a real, existing video via YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint before publication. No Wikipedia sources are used.
