The health of Edward Nalwamba, a 78-year-old Ugandan priest in ICE detention in Aurora for nearly a year, is deteriorating (Yahoo News, 2026). He has presented respiratory symptoms for months — coughing, chest pain, runny nose, scratchy throat and voice, headaches, dizziness and fatigue — that a medical provider who reviewed his case said could indicate tuberculosis (Yahoo News, 2026).

Nalwamba, who has lived in Colorado for more than two decades, is extremely malnourished and now wheelchair-bound, according to his attorney Joy Athanasiou; he fell in early August and has nearly fallen multiple times (Yahoo News, 2026). Treatment at the Aurora facility, operated by private prison company The GEO Group, has consisted of cough medicine, a chest X-ray and a stethoscope exam, with no additional respiratory testing (Yahoo News, 2026). “They keep giving him very minimal treatment, like cough medicine, but not really doing any more aggressive treatment, testing, anything,” Athanasiou said (Yahoo News, 2026).

“Brother, I cough until I feel my chest will burst,” Nalwamba wrote to a friend in messages reviewed by Newsline (Yahoo News, 2026).

Separately, U.S. immigration officials said Wednesday they did not publicly disclose the death of a Guatemalan man who had a seizure at a New Jersey detention center, citing a recent policy shift and saying they were not notified he had died (MSN, 2026).

3. Deportations & Court Rulings

The administration won an appeal earlier this year when a split panel of three Republican-appointed judges appeared to make it harder for immigrants to challenge their mandatory detention, meaning they could be held without bond (MSN, 2026).
