Kemetic Minds — Earth & Survival Series | August 12, 2026

⚠️ Key Findings

  • USGS has cataloged 24 earthquakes of M6.5 or greater worldwide between January 1 and August 12, 2026 — 10 of them M7.0 or stronger[1].
  • 18 of those 24 events (about 75%) struck along the Pacific Ring of Fire, consistent with USGS’s finding that the belt produces roughly 90% of the world’s earthquakes[4].
  • Colombia’s fresh M 7.4 disaster on August 10 has killed at least 216 people as of this report, with more than 2,700 names on crowdsourced missing-persons lists[5][6].
  • Venezuela’s June 24 earthquake doublet — covered here at Kemetic Minds when the confirmed toll stood at 164 — has since risen to at least 6,125 confirmed dead, with 61,000 people treated in hospitals[7].
  • Magnitude alone does not predict casualties: Tonga’s M 7.5 (234 km deep) killed no one, while Venezuela’s shallow M 7.5 (10 km deep) in a densely populated soft-soil basin has killed thousands.

Note. 1985–2012: Johnston Archive compiled from USGS records. 2013–2021: USGS Earthquake Hazards Program statistics table. 2022–2026: USGS Earthquake Catalog[3]. 2026 figure reflects YTD events as of August 12 (incomplete year). Dashed line = USGS long-term average of 15 M7+ events per year.

What Your Family Must Do Now

The single most impactful thing families in seismically active regions can do is act before an earthquake. Post-event response is reactive; pre-event preparation is the only tool that meaningfully reduces injury and death[18][19]. For a deeper walkthrough of building a full household survival plan for earthquakes and other extreme events, see Kemetic Minds’ Survival Skills for a Time of War and Extreme Earth Changes guide.

✅ Before: Your 72-Hour Checklist

  1. Build a 72-hour emergency kit: one gallon of water per person per day (3-day minimum), non-perishable food, flashlight, hand-crank radio, first-aid kit, N95 masks, a wrench to shut off gas, whistle, 7-day medication supply, ID copies in a waterproof bag.
  2. Secure your space: strap water heaters and heavy appliances to wall studs; anchor bookshelves, cabinets, and TVs; move heavy items off high shelves.
  3. Know your utility shutoffs — locate the gas valve and keep a wrench nearby; know how to cut power at the breaker.
  4. Create a family communications plan with an out-of-state contact and two meeting points.
  5. Practice drop, cover, and hold on twice a year with children.

🚨 During: Drop, Cover, Hold On

  1. DROP to your hands and knees immediately.
  2. COVER your head and neck; get under a sturdy table if one is nearby.
  3. HOLD ON until all shaking stops — most injuries occur when people move during shaking.
  4. If outside, move away from buildings, streetlights, and power lines.
  5. If near a coast, move to high ground immediately after shaking stops — don’t wait for an official tsunami warning.

📱 After: The Critical First 72 Hours

  1. Check for injuries and hazards before moving — broken glass and gas leaks cause most post-earthquake deaths.
  2. Don’t use open flames or light switches until you’re certain there’s no gas leak.
  3. Expect aftershocks — Venezuela’s doublet showed a second major quake can follow within seconds.
  4. Tune to official emergency broadcasts (NOAA Weather Radio, local alerts, USGS ShakeAlert on the US West Coast).
  5. Document damage before cleaning up, and register with DisasterAssistance.gov if in a federally declared disaster zone.

Methodology: Earthquake catalog data queried directly from the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program FDSNWS event API (earthquake.usgs.gov) for all M6.5+ events, January 1–August 12, 2026. Death toll and damage figures reflect the most recently confirmed counts as of August 12, 2026 and are attributed to the primary news and government sources cited; several remain provisional as search-and-rescue and recovery operations continue, particularly for the August 10 Colombia earthquake.
