Mississippi Valley State player remains in ICE custody after visa expired
Magnolia Tribune reported Oct. 12 that a Mississippi Valley State University basketball player, Qingfang Pang, remains in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after his student visa expired.
The Tribuneâs item cites WJTV reporting that Pang, a Chinese national who came to the United States to play junior-college basketball in New York before signing with MVSU, was detained when his student visa expired. WJTV, as reported by Magnolia Tribune, quoted attorney Marcus Session saying Pang was told to sign a voluntary removal order and that Pang said he did not know what he was signing and was not provided an interpreter. WJTV told Magnolia Tribune that Session said Pang wants to return home and that Session has been in touch with Pangâs family about the case.[1]
Washington state Japanese Americans make 4-day pilgrimage to ICE detention center
Posted Over four days and more than 45 miles walked, a group of protesters making a pilgrimage between immigration enforcement sites in King County is drawing a line between mounting immigrant detentions across the nation and the incarceration of Japanese Americans decades ago.
Not OK Now” and “End family detention,” singing on call-and-response, “We remember our dignity. The pilgrimage, organized by Japanese American and immigrant advocate network Tsuru for Solidarity, began in Seattle’s Hing Hay Park on Wednesday and will end at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Tacoma on Saturday, where the group will host a rally at 1 p.m.[2]
Or in English, “For the sake of the children” — a Japanese phrase of resistance used after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 in 1942, authorizing the forced removal and incarceration of more than 110,000 people of Japanese descent from the West Coast, about 70% of whom were U.S. citizens.

Judge Orders Immediate Release of Woman Detained by ICE During Her Green Card Interview
A federal judge ordered the immediate release of Armelle Bondonga from ICE custody, finding the government had not shown her removal was reasonably foreseeable under the governing standard.
Judge Tanya Walton Pratt of the Southern District of Indiana signed the order after reviewing her detention. The case involves a 22-year-old citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo whose November 2025 deportation order is under appeal. Bondonga entered the United States in 2013 on a tourist visa that expired the next year.[3]
Mass. high court must decide what to do about ICE arrests during criminal trials
There is a clash of priorities between Massachusetts' criminal courts and immigration enforcement officials.
At least three different men were picked up by ICE in the middle of their separate criminal trials. Now the Supreme Judicial Court must decide what kind of action state courts can take when federal officials disrupt their trials. Jennifer Smith, senior reporter for the CommonWealth Beacon, sat down with WBUR's Tiziana Dearing to discuss her reporting on the SJC case.[4]

ICE agent SUV strikes man during Houston arrest attempt, investigators say
Protests erupt as sheriff and DA open separate probes into Houston ICE SUV incident HOUSTON, Texas — A man was struck by an ICE agent’s SUV during an attempted arrest in Houston over the weekend, an incident that sparked protests and prompted multiple investigations.
Harris County investigators said ICE agents were trying to arrest a driver with a warrant when the driver and a passenger ran from their car. Investigators said an agent tried to box in the passenger with an SUV and hit him.[5]
“In an attempt to capture the passenger, the ICE agent was trying to box him in the backside of the building at the corner and struck the passenger,” said Major Anthony McConnell of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

US launches immigration raid of Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar's home, Fox News reports
US launches immigration raid of Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar's home WASHINGTON, Oct 12 (Reuters) – US authorities conducted a predawn Monday raid on the Washington-area home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an ongoing investigation, the Justice Department said.
The raid followed a criminal fraud investigation into the Somali-born lawmaker's immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a child, Fox News Digital reported, citing unidentified sources. A representative for Omar did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The raid came a little more than three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, when President Donald Trump's Republicans will be trying to defend their thin majorities in the US Congress.[6]

Man Shot by ICE in New York Still Has Bullet in Neck, Lawyers Say
Oscar Belgal, the man shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in New York City on Thursday, remains in federal custody as his attorneys say he is "living through an unimaginable nightmare."
In a statement on Sunday, The Legal Aid Society and Make the Road New York (MRNY), who are acting as counsel for Belgal, described their client’s condition while in detention. Belgal, 28, was shot in the neck on Thursday while in the car with his 5-year-old child.[7]
ICE official Marcos Charles told reporters on Friday that Belgal had "refused lawful orders to exit his vehicle…then accelerated his vehicle, smashing into two of our government ICE vehicles, and then weaponized his vehicle and proceeded to accelerate going toward other officers."

How immigration is molding the US midterms: ‘Trump has gone too far’
If there is one campaign promise that Donald Trump has kept, it is his pledge to deliver “mass deportations”.
Two years later, voters are living uneasily with the consequences. Trump himself has called the midterm elections this November – which will decide which party controls each house of Congress – a referendum on his presidency. In many ways, they will also serve as a referendum of his hardline anti-immigration policies, and the multitudinous ways they have reshaped Americans’ daily lives.[8]
