Detention & Deaths
A 26-acre California site was being turned into an ICE detention facility without a full environmental re
A federal judge has halted construction of a planned Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility near Gilroy, California, ruling that the federal government must address environmental review requirements before the project can proceed.
US District Judge Eumi Lee granted a preliminary injunction on Friday, September 11, in a lawsuit brought by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Santa Clara County. The order keeps construction on hold while the court considers the next steps in the case. The dispute centres on a 24.5-acre property in an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County that the federal government leased in January 2025 for use as a potential ICE holding facility.[1]
ICE Releases New Jersey Detainee Arrested While Buying Diapers After Judge Rules Eight-Month Detention Illegal
Peruvian immigrant Martin Soto, a prominent participant in protests at Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center, reunited with his wife and children after a federal judge ordered his release from ICE custody.
NEWARK, NJ — A Peruvian immigrant who spent eight months in federal immigration custody after being arrested while reportedly purchasing diapers for his infant son has been released following a federal judge’s ruling that his continued detention was unlawful. Martin Soto walked out of the Elizabeth Detention Center Tuesday evening, October 6, after U.S. District Judge Jamel K. Semper ordered federal authorities to release him. Soto, who became a prominent figure in a detainee protest movement at Newark’s Delaney Hall immigration facility, was reunited with his wife, Gabriela, and their children outside the detention center.[2]
Courts & Lawsuits
Obama judge FORBIDS deportation of illegal alien shot by ICE in the Bronx — unless court order is obtained
October 09, 2026 Mamdani has demanded the end of all ICE operations in New York City.
A man shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Thursday in the Bronx cannot be deported unless officials obtain a court order, a judge ruled Friday. Protests erupted after the man, later identified as a 28-year-old Dominican national, was shot during a traffic stop in New York City. 'Our officers, using their training and believing that their life and the life of the partners and the general public were in danger, used their training and fired weapons.'[3]
St. Louis Archdiocese sues over policy barring it from providing sacraments to ICE detainees
(OSV News) — The Archdiocese of St. Louis filed a lawsuit against the federal government Oct. 5 over a policy it said prohibits priests from distributing Communion and hearing confessions to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, said a no-contact policy at the Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center — a detention center ICE uses for migrants awaiting deportation proceedings — has refused to accommodate clergy seeking to provide sacraments to migrants held there.[4]
In a statement, the Archdiocese of St. Louis said it “steadfastly supports the right of all Catholics and the priests who serve them to practice their Catholic faith.”

Raids & Arrests
Exclusive: ICE Detains Dozens of Faith Leaders Under Trump’s Crackdown
“They pulled me out of the car, slammed me on the icy floor, and cuffed me,” Pastor Steven Tendo told Newsweek.
Tendo, a Pentecostal pastor from Uganda who sought asylum in the United States, said he was leaving work in Vermont on February 4, 2026, when ICE officers surrounded his car. He was detained for 16 days before a federal judge ordered his release, ruling that ICE "contravened its own regulations … by failing to provide a meaningful, individualized basis for his re-detention" in time.[5]
“It was something that I would never forget the rest of my life.”

ICE detained a disabled dad after a noise complaint. A county jail let him languish, he says.
When her contractions hit at dawn, Wendys Martinez eased down the steep-pitched stairs of her rowhome and called a stranger instead of 911.
Her four young children, two boys and two girls, were still asleep. She didn’t wake them; it was too early.[6]
But she left a note reminding them of instructions she had given them many times before: “Don’t open the door, not to anyone, even if they’re trying to break it down.”
