Google Maps has renamed Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users in the United States, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on August 27, according to a report by Jang (2026).
Key Facts
- On Saturday, August 29, Google said it had changed its maps “to reflect name changes in official government sources,” in accordance with updates from the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) (Jang, 2026).
- Users in the United States will see the name “Lake America,” while users in Canada and other countries will see “Lake Ontario” (Jang, 2026).
- Apple Maps in the US still displays “Lake Ontario,” according to the report (Jang, 2026).
- The change follows Google’s earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” under a separate Trump executive order, a move that prompted Mexico to threaten a lawsuit (Jang, 2026).
- Trump signed the executive order on August 27, days after Canadian negotiators walked away from trade negotiations with the US (Jang, 2026).
Reactions From Canadian Officials
Ontario Premier Doug Ford compared the move to an SNL skit. Appearing on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, Ford said: “No one’s going to call it Lake of America. It’s been Lake Ontario for hundreds of years. It’s going to continue being Lake Ontario. It’s just so disappointing” (Jang, 2026).
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced the executive order, citing the Wendat, an Indigenous people of North America, as the source of the original name (Jang, 2026).
Trade Dispute Context
According to the report, Trump issued the renaming order days after Canadian negotiators walked away from trade negotiations with the US, after Carney deemed the US’ demands “unfair” (Jang, 2026). As a result, US tariffs targeting an estimated $28 billion in Canadian goods went into effect, prompting Canada to announce its own 50% retaliatory tariffs against US steel, dairy, electronics and other goods last week (Jang, 2026).
What’s Still Unconfirmed
The report by Jang (2026) is the sole source for these details; no independent confirmation of the map change, the executive order’s contents, or the cited trade figures was available in the provided material.
