‘Make It Make Sense’ | What are slavery reparations and how would they work?.
Black Current News is a media partner for the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Afrikan Reparations’ UK Reparations Conference, taking place this Saturday, 17 October, at Friends House in London.
The free event brings together grassroots organisers, campaigners, policymakers, legal experts and international partners to discuss reparative justice, with options to attend in person or online.
Ahead of the conference, we explain what reparations mean, the history behind the demands and what putting them into practice could involve. Why are people calling for reparations?
Rooted in resistance to enslavement and colonial oppression, the reparations movement has been sustained by generations of grassroots campaigners and descendants of enslaved African people.
At its heart is a demand to acknowledge, account for and repair the harm caused by slavery and colonialism, including their continuing consequences.
England’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade dates back to the 1560s, when John Hawkins began trafficking enslaved African people to Spain’s Caribbean colonies.
Elizabeth I backed his later voyages, providing money and ships in exchange for a share of the profits Enslaved Africans endured forced labour, physical brutality and sexual violence.[1]
About the Freedmen News Watch
This series follows the news that bears on Black American freedmen and their descendants, the people freed from slavery in this country: citizenship and treaty-rights cases such as the Cherokee, Creek and Seminole Freedmen, the Dawes Rolls and Freedmen’s Bureau records, heirs’ property and Black land loss, reparations and descendant-based programs, and the history and memory of emancipation. It covers the hard news and the good news alike. Every passage is quoted as reported and linked to its source, and nothing is generated. The photograph on each post is a public-domain file photo from Wikimedia Commons, credited, and shows a place or monument, not the people in the story.
