Evening News Recap — August 24, 2026

Here is what shaped Black America and civil rights today.

1. Police Brutality: Man With Knife Injured in Sayreville Police Shooting in New Jersey

Police in Sayreville, New Jersey shot and injured a man in his early 30s late Saturday afternoon on Kendall Drive in the borough’s Parlin section[1]. Officers responded after neighbors reported the man was causing a disturbance and possibly threatening people with a knife. When he refused to drop the weapon and lunged at an officer with it, that officer fired several shots[1].

  • What happened: A knife-wielding man was shot by an officer after allegedly lunging at them.
  • Where: Kendall Drive, Parlin section of Sayreville, New Jersey.
  • Status: The man was hospitalized; his condition has not been released.
  • Investigation: Middlesex County investigators are still canvassing for surveillance footage and witnesses; no bodycam video or officer name has been released[1].

Police shootings involving people in visible mental health or substance-use crisis — as residents described the man in this case — remain one of the most persistent flashpoints in the police-reform debate, since departments nationwide still send armed patrol officers, not crisis clinicians, to the vast majority of these calls.

2. ICE: Mother of 5-Year-Old Detained by ICE Plans Voluntary Deportation, Attorney Says

Five-year-old Liam Tadeo and his father, Victor Martinez Nieto, were detained by ICE during a traffic stop in Austin on August 16 while on their way to Liam’s soccer game[2]. Both are being held at the Dilley Detention Center near San Antonio.

  1. Martinez Nieto was arrested in late 2025, accepted voluntary departure, and was removed to Mexico in February — then re-entered the U.S. before this month’s stop[2].
  2. Liam’s mother, Maria, who is also undocumented, has now decided to voluntarily deport to Mexico as well, according to the family’s immigration attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch.
  3. DHS has told the family that Liam will stay in ICE custody with his father rather than being released to his mother beforehand[2].
“Victor has asked for Liam to be released to his mother since the moment of their detention, and DHS will not allow Maria to just go pick Liam up,” Lincoln-Goldfinch said[2].

She has warned that if the family’s cases proceed on different timelines, Liam could end up transferred into the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement as an unaccompanied minor — separated from both parents.

3. White Supremacist Group Activity: Minneapolis Crowd Confronts and Police Arrest Provocateur Jake Lang

Hundreds of Minneapolis residents turned out Saturday to counter-protest a rally led by Edward Jacob “Jake” Lang, a white supremacist provocateur who has repeatedly staged confrontational demonstrations targeting Black, Muslim, and other communities around the country[3].

  • Lang and a handful of associates — some who had traveled from Michigan — rode in the bed of a pickup truck with a megaphone in front of Minneapolis City Hall.
  • A second vehicle carrying private security followed, and that security detail pepper-sprayed the surrounding crowd indiscriminately[3].
  • Police arrested seven people connected to the two vehicles, including Lang, on probable-cause riot charges, and impounded both vehicles[3].
  • Three officers were injured in the chaos; Minneapolis Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson said the department had prepared for the event in advance.

It was Lang’s second such stunt in the city after an earlier anti-Muslim march left him needing stitches, and he separately faces trial in October for kicking an ice sculpture during a prior Minneapolis appearance[3] — a pattern advocates say shows how repeat far-right provocateurs can strain local police resources even when their own rallies draw only a handful of supporters.

4. Civil Rights & Politics: Education Department Proposes Rule Barring Accreditors From Requiring DEI

The U.S. Department of Education proposed a sweeping overhaul of the college accreditation system on August 19 that would bar accreditors from requiring colleges to maintain race-based diversity, equity, and inclusion policies[4].

“[We want to] reorient our quality assurance framework so that accreditors prioritize student outcomes,” said Under Secretary Nicholas Kent[4].

The proposed rule would instead require accreditors to ensure colleges maintain “intellectual diversity” among faculty, with a carve-out for religious institutions. It specifically prohibits accreditors from requiring colleges to provide “preferences on the basis of race” — language that directly targets the kind of race-conscious admissions and hiring supports many historically Black colleges and civil rights groups have relied on[4].

  • The Council for Higher Education Accreditation warned the proposal amounts to “undue federal prescription.”
  • The Center for American Progress called the “intellectual diversity” standard vague and warned it could undermine student belonging and retention on campus[4].
  • Public comments are due September 21.
  • The Department aims to finalize the rule by November 1 and put it into effect July 1, 2027.

5. Hate Crimes: Bronx Man Charged After Spitting On, Headbutting, and Hurling Racial Slur at Black Security Guard

Federal prosecutors charged Larry Montes, 46, of the Bronx, with two hate-crime counts and one count of damaging religious property after he disrupted a Shabbat service at Manhattan’s Central Synagogue on August 15[5].

  1. Montes stood up during the evening service, knocked over two ceremonial candlesticks, cursed at congregants, and punched an attending woman before security moved to remove him[5].
  2. As police handcuffed him, Montes turned on a Black security guard — spitting in his face, headbutting him, and cursing at him using a racial slur, according to prosecutors[5].
  3. Montes is being held at Rikers Island after a judge denied bail.
  4. The two federal hate-crime counts each carry up to 10 years in prison, and the religious-property damage count carries up to 20.
“An attack on a house of worship is an attack on the fundamental right to practice one’s faith safely, and our Office will work tirelessly to ensure the defendant is held fully accountable,” said U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald[5].
