5. Hate Crimes: Bronx Man Charged After Spitting On, Headbutting, and Hurling Racial Slur at Black Security Guard
Federal prosecutors charged Larry Montes, 46, of the Bronx, with two hate-crime counts and one count of damaging religious property after he disrupted a Shabbat service at Manhattan’s Central Synagogue on August 15[5].
- Montes stood up during the evening service, knocked over two ceremonial candlesticks, cursed at congregants, and punched an attending woman before security moved to remove him[5].
