KEMETIC MINDS — BREAKING NEWS
August 06, 2026

Nurses at Maine Medical Center held a protest outside the Portland hospital Wednesday morning, calling for the release of colleague Debora Kapisha, a registered nurse detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (WMTW, 2026).

Key Facts

  • According to the Maine State Nurses Association, ICE agents detained Kapisha on Thursday, July 30, while she was traveling through Boston Logan International Airport (WMTW, 2026).
  • A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed Kapisha was arrested by ICE on Thursday, and said she entered the U.S. on May 14, 2024, on a visa that expired Nov. 13, 2024, and failed to depart; she will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings (WMTW, 2026).
  • The union says Kapisha, who is from Zambia, is legally authorized to live and work in the U.S. while her asylum case is pending, and an email obtained by Maine’s Total Coverage says MaineHealth authorized her to work until 2030 (WMTW, 2026).
  • DHS says “any pending application does not confer legal status” (WMTW, 2026).
  • The union said ICE planned to transfer Kapisha from Massachusetts to Louisiana, but said Thursday that will not be the case; her attorneys and union representatives are seeking her release and trying to prevent a transfer (WMTW, 2026).

Union Account and Federal Response

“Nurses like her are not easy to replace,” said Abbey Nelson, a nurse at Maine Medical Center (WMTW, 2026). “Debora is an amazing nurse and takes great care of her patients,” said Abigail Nelson, a registered nurse who works with Kapisha. “She is a kind and supportive coworker. We are like a family here, and it feels like a piece of us is missing” (WMTW, 2026).

A DHS spokesperson said in a statement: “Kapisha entered our country on May 14, 2024, on a visa that was set to expire on November 13, 2024. She failed to depart before this date in violation of our nation’s immigration laws. She will remain in ICE custody pending the outcome of her removal proceedings. She will receive full due process” (WMTW, 2026).

Kapisha works as a medical-surgical nurse at Maine Medical Center, and the union says she is legally authorized to live and work in the U.S. while her asylum case is pending (WMTW, 2026). MaineHealth said it cannot comment on individual care team members due to privacy restrictions, and said Wednesday that it has contacted members of Maine’s congressional delegation to get more information about Kapisha’s status (WMTW, 2026).

The nurses are also calling on Maine Medical Center to sponsor Kapisha for permanent residency (WMTW, 2026).

What’s Still Unconfirmed

The outcome of Kapisha’s removal proceedings and the current status of her asylum case are not confirmed in the available reporting (WMTW, 2026). The source does not explain why the union said the planned Louisiana transfer will not occur.
