  • The ACLU and other organizations have been fighting against the Trump administration’s attempts to obtain sensitive voter data, citing concerns about voter privacy (American Civil Liberties Union, 2026)
  • Friday’s Illinois ruling was the DOJ’s 19th straight courtroom loss nationwide in the voter-roll campaign, and the administration is expected to appeal to a federal appeals court ahead of the 2026 midterms (Newsweek, 2026)

1. Civil Rights & Voting Rights

A federal court in the Central District of Illinois ruled that the state is not required to share sensitive registered voter data with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), finding that the government’s broad demand for Illinois’ voters’ confidential information runs afoul of federal law (American Civil Liberties Union, 2026). The decision stems from a December 2025 lawsuit, United States v. Matthews, filed after the Illinois State Board of Elections refused to turn over its unredacted voter registration file. According to Ethan Herenstein, staff attorney with the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, “The Trump administration cannot manufacture a voter fraud crisis to justify a sweeping up of sensitive personal information from millions of Americans” (American Civil Liberties Union, 2026).

Update: The Illinois decision, handed down by U.S. District Judge Colleen Lawless, was dismissed with prejudice, meaning the DOJ cannot refile the identical claims at the district court level — though the department “could still ask an appellate court to review the ruling as it continues its effort to expand federal access to state voter registration records ahead of the midterms” (Newsweek, 2026). The loss is the 19th in a row for the DOJ’s nationwide voter-roll campaign, following near-identical rulings against Pennsylvania, Maryland, Wisconsin, Maine, Arizona, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Oregon, California and Michigan (Newsweek, 2026).

2. Hate Crimes

A Queens man, Dawood Faisal, was indicted for a car crash that killed a Jewish woman and also charged with hate crimes for destroying property outside a kosher bagel shop (freebeacon.com, 2026). The incident occurred on May 25, when Faisal allegedly drove over 75 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone and crashed into two cars, killing 71-year-old Cara Trager. Faisal also allegedly vandalized a kosher bagel shop, Bagels & Co., on two separate occasions, knocking over metal plant stands and dumping plants and dirt onto the sidewalk (freebeacon.com, 2026).

“The entire premise for this lawsuit is the myth of massive noncitizen voter fraud — a canard that has been repeatedly debunked even by supporters of this administration,”

What’s Disputed or Unconfirmed

The motivation behind Dawood Faisal’s alleged crimes is disputed, with his actions being characterized as hate crimes by the prosecution, but the extent to which his actions were motivated by antisemitism is not yet independently verified (freebeacon.com, 2026).

Kemetic Minds Analysis

Today’s verified reporting covered: Civil Rights & Voting Rights; Hate Crimes. Every claim above traces back to a specific, dated, fetched source — treat the Key Takeaways as the verified factual floor, and the ‘What’s Disputed or Unconfirmed’ section as the honest boundary of what today’s sourcing actually supports versus what’s still allegation or one-sided claim.

Investigative Methodology: This roundup is generated once daily at 6:00 PM America/Chicago from live news sources published within the prior 24 hours, plus primary-source civil-rights monitoring feeds (SPLC, ADL, ProPublica). Every claim is grounded in fetched source text with an APA7 in-text citation; nothing is written from the model’s general knowledge. Every video embed is verified to be a real, existing video via YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint before publication — none are written by the drafting model. Pull-quotes are extracted verbatim from the cited article, never composed. No Wikipedia sources are used, and social-media posts (TikTok/X/Instagram) are only referenced when a real, working link to that post appears directly in a cited news source — this post does not auto-embed unverified social content, since a fabricated post link would be worse than no embed at all.
