KEMETIC MINDS — BREAKING NEWS
September 08, 2026

Canada struck back Tuesday with tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, the latest escalation in a trade war that has ensnarled the two longtime allies [1][2]. The duties took effect at 12:01 a.m. under an order in council, an executive action, and Canada says they match Washington’s tariffs dollar for dollar and rate for rate [1].

Key Facts

  • The tariffs hit hundreds of American products — including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, farm equipment, metal parts and wood products — at rates of 15%, 25% or 50% [1][2].
  • The duties cover about $20 billion in American goods, roughly 6% of the $333.6 billion the United States exported to Canada last year [1].
  • Canadian officials have pledged to respond “dollar for dollar” to any U.S. duties [2], and eight of Canada’s 10 provinces continue to restrict or ban sales of U.S. alcohol [1].
  • U.S. spirits exports to Canada fell more than 70% year over year after those alcohol restrictions took effect, according to the Distilled Spirits Council [1].
  • RBC Economics, the research arm of the Royal Bank of Canada, says the measures are unlikely to dent overall U.S. growth but could hit some businesses hard [1].

From collapsed talks to a tariff war

Canada-U.S. trade talks collapsed Aug. 21. Since then, Trump and his administration have unleashed a barrage of tariffs, threats and personal attacks portraying Canada as weak and dependent, and officials in Washington have repeatedly mocked the size of Canada’s economy and military [1][2].

Trump has already threatened additional tariffs on auto imports from Canada, and on Friday he suggested he could try to halt bilateral trade outright [2]. Hours before Canada’s new tariffs took effect, Trump singled out Bombardier, the Canadian plane maker: “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough!” [1]. “If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank,'” he wrote on Truth Social [1]. He also accused Canada of blocking “our GREAT American Banks, and Companies” and urged consumers to “BUY AMERICAN. FLY ON AMERICAN AIRLINERS. ENJOY AMERICAN LIQUOR AND BEVERAGES. SAIL ON LAKE AMERICA” [2].

Bombardier said in a statement that aerospace products are a top American export and that the company makes crucial components, such as wings, in California and Texas. “Bombardier is a strong contributor to the sector, creating tens of thousands of jobs across the United States” [2]. Flavio Volpe, president of APMA Canada, a manufacturing trade group, responded on X that Bombardier uses U.S.-made GE and Honeywell jet engines [1].

Prime Minister Mark Carney, who describes his nation as “at war,” has sought to position himself as a bulwark against Trump’s trade aggression [2]. He says U.S. demands could hollow out key Canadian industries and limit the country’s independence, while Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty have rallied the public behind him [1].

A test watched beyond the border

The outcome could resonate far beyond Canada, showing other governments whether a smaller U.S. ally can withstand Trump’s economic pressure [1]. Canadian historian Robert Bothwell said: “Carney and Canada have become symbolic of resistance to him. And what he’ll want to do is make an example of Carney and Canada and theoretically terrify everybody else while in fact showing them that they need to remove themselves even further from the United States” [1].

Both sides say the fight carries costs for ordinary households. “This tit-for-tat retaliation is bad for Canadian businesses and consumers, and bad for American businesses and consumers,” said Brad Wood, senior director for trade [2]. The White House did not respond to a request for comment on Trump’s Bombardier threat [2].

What’s Still Unconfirmed

No fact in the two reports is in dispute: both say the tariffs are now in effect. What is not yet known is whether Trump acts on his Bombardier threat or follows through on additional tariffs on Canadian auto imports — neither of which the sources report as having happened [2].
