As reported by NBC News:

After three years of navigating war, crisis and global outcry, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing one of the most significant electoral tests of his decades-long political career.

As Israelis go to the polls on Tuesday, Netanyahu’s party is neck and neck with former Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, who has emerged as his strongest rival in a campaign that has revolved around everything from Israel’s security and military conscription to bread-and-butter issues like the economy.

Why is this election so important? This is the first nationwide election in Israel since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks, the deadliest day in the country’s history.

The attacks, which saw 1,195 people killed and 251 taken into Gaza as hostages, triggered a major security crisis that led to three years of war on multiple fronts.

There are few households in Israel that haven’t been affected in some way by the events that have played out since, leaving a sense of profound grief and insecurity that lingers across the Israeli society.[1]

Video: The Guardian, October 25, 2026 — “Thousands rally against Netanyahu in Tel Aviv ahead of Israeli elections”. Matched to this story by shared names and terms in its title; watch the original for full context.

Where It Happened

Tel-Aviv, Israel

The pin marks Tel-Aviv as named in the report, not an exact address. Map data: OpenStreetMap contributors.

On the record

“For his supporters, he is the strong prime minister who fought back and was able to expand the war to other fronts to defend Israel,” she said.[1]

The numbers in the reporting

120 seats
No one Israeli party can expect to earn a majority of the Israeli Knesset’s 120 seats — that’s never happened in Israeli history.[1]
23 seats
But the latest polling by Israel’s Wala news shows Eisenkot’s party, Yashar, pushing ahead, winning 23 seats compared to Netanyahu’s Likud winning 19.[1]

How 4 outlets are reporting it

  • What to know about the Israeli elections as Netanyahu faces a battle for survival (NBC News)
  • Israeli Jews Across the Spectrum Face an Election of Fears (The New York Times)
  • A look at the main issues in Israeli elections seen as a referendum on Netanyahu (AP News)
  • The anti-Bibi candidate who has Netanyahu on his heels (Axios)

What the official record says

the House site (iqconnect) says, in its own words:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the moves, saying they rewarded Hamas for the 7 October attack.[2]

the House site (doggett) says, in its own words:

Although Israel has been at war with Hamas for over 100 days and still has over 100 hostages to recover, Netanyahu’s No. 1 focus is Netanyahu.[3]

So this was the important context for Netanyahu’s remarks at the news conference on Thursday evening.[3]

State says, in its own words:

IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot shortened Azaria’s sentence from 18 months to 14 months in September 2017.[4]
