As reported by The Guardian:

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president, has staged a dramatic election fightback, defeating his far-right opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, to claim a historic fourth term in power.

With 100% of votes counted the 80-year-old leftist received 4.4m votes more than Bolsonaro, with a 51.79% share to his 45-year-old rival’s 48.21%. However, soon after Brazil’s electoral authority confirmed Lula’s victory, Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat and asked for the results to be annulled.

Lula narrowly lost the first round of the election to Bolsonaro in early October, casting his political future into doubt and plunging progressive Brazilians into three weeks of despair.

Never, since the return of democracy in the 1980s, has the first round runner-up won the second vote.

But Lula did precisely that on Sunday, prompting joyous scenes on the streets of São Paulo, where he had been following events, and at the hotel where he was watching the count.[1]

On the record

Congratulations, President Lula!”, while Paraguayan president Santiago Peña said “I salute the Brazilian people for this great democratic journey.” Lula’s victory came after his supporters staged two massive shows of support on Saturday, with more than a million people flocking to Rio’s Copacabana beach and an even larger number marching on Paulista Avenue.[1]

Paarlberg also said the reelected president would closely follow the US midterm elections, in which “his position could improve” if Trump’s Republican Party loses control of one or both chambers of Congress, potentially bringing greater scrutiny of the president’s agenda.[2]

The numbers in the reporting

10 million
The Workers’ Party candidate added more than 10 million votes in the three weeks between the two rounds of voting, while his rival gained just 3.6 million.[2]
590,000
In Minas Gerais, the state with Brazil’s second-largest electorate, he went from losing by nearly 590,000 votes to winning by about 99,000 — a swing of roughly 690,000 votes in the margin between the two candidates.[2]

What CNN reports

Sigue nuestra cobertura en vivo en español de las elecciones en Brasil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made history on Sunday, setting a record for Brazil and the rest of Latin America by becoming the first president to win a fourth term – and he did so days before turning 81, an age when many other leaders decide to leave politics behind.

The Brazilian president’s remarkable comeback against his right-wing rival, Flávio Bolsonaro, also set another record. Since Brazil’s return to democracy in 1985, no president has managed to overturn a first-round defeat.[2]

What is not yet confirmed

  • Following in the footsteps of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, who four years ago also refused to acknowledge his defeat to Lula – before attempting a coup and being convicted for it – the senator cited a supreme court justice’s decision to extend voting hours as the alleged reason.[1]

What the official record says

the House site (jayapal) says, in its own words:

Jayapal, Sanders Demand Answers on Meta’s Potential Interference in Brazilian Elections SEATTLE, W.A. — U.S.[3]

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are demanding answers from Meta Platforms, Inc. following credible reports of Meta restricting or suppressing content associated with the campaign of incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva while amplifying or recommending content associated with the campaign of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, thereby creating starkly unequal conditions in the digital environment.[3]
