In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission is warning that scammers are impersonating Evite, Paperless Post and Punchbowl with fake event invitations (Bitdefender, 2026).

In Canada, lawyers filed a proposed class action over an alleged 42-million-record Canadian Tire data breach affecting 38 million customer accounts (YorkRegion.com, 2026).

Ransomware activity surged in July after a second-quarter lull (Infosecurity Magazine, 2026), and Zscaler’s Brett Stone-Gross discussed with SC Media which job roles attackers target (SC Media, 2026).

The “boss scam,” as the cyber crime centre calls it, is a WhatsApp-based hijack fraud that is on the rise (Bing News, 2026).

Kemetic Minds Analysis

Today’s briefing pulled from 8 news sources and 3 peer-reviewed studies. Today’s strongest research signal comes from Child Abuse Review (2024), cited 7 times — the kind of study worth weighing more heavily than a single news anecdote. The pattern worth watching isn’t any single scam headline — it’s whether today’s news matches what the research already predicts about who gets targeted and what actually reduces risk, or whether it’s a genuinely new variant the literature hasn’t caught up to yet.
