Anak Krakatau erupted early Sunday, and its ash cloud climbed so high that Indonesia suspended air travel across Jakarta and beyond, stranding more than 150,000 passengers (BBC News, 2026; CBS News, 2026). A magnitude 3.2 earthquake rattled the Compton area of Los Angeles County, and a sinkhole closed a Gainesville, Florida, street (International Business Times, 2026; WCJB, 2026).

Key takeaways:

  • Air travel shut down: Indonesia suspended operations at eight airports — including Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta — leaving more than 150,000 passengers stranded (BBC News, 2026; Mirror, 2026).
  • Ash climbed high: The eruption cloud reached 50,000 feet (15,000 m) west over Sumatra and 20,000 feet (6,000 m) east over Java (BBC News, 2026).
  • Flight toll: Indonesia’s transport minister counted 712 affected flights; CBS News (2026) reported 516 flight movements by mid-afternoon, 202 of them at Soekarno-Hatta alone.
  • No tsunami, no casualties: No evacuation orders were issued, and no tsunami warning was in effect (BBC News, 2026; CBS News, 2026).
  • California shaking: A magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck near Compton at 12:13 a.m. Sunday, drawing 623 “Did You Feel It?” reports (International Business Times, 2026).
  • Florida sinkhole: A sinkhole opened on Southwest Fourth Avenue at Sixth Street in Gainesville, closing the road while crews filled it [1].

1. Sunda Strait, Indonesia: Anak Krakatau eruption shuts airports, strands 150,000

Anak Krakatau — the name means “child of Krakatau” — showed signs of activity from Friday and erupted for about 30 seconds in the early hours of Sunday (CBS News, 2026). The volcano had generated continuous seismic activity, lava fountains and booming sounds since late Friday night, and two more eruptions followed early Sunday (BBC News, 2026).

Ash spread across parts of Jakarta and Lampung province on Sumatra’s southern tip (CBS News, 2026), and ground tests found ash moving toward West Java (BBC News, 2026). AirNav Indonesia closed airspace around Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma airports in Jakarta, plus four other airports, including Radin Inten II in Lampung (CBS News, 2026).

Closures ripple from six to eight airports

News.com.au (2026) reported six airports closed with more than 200 flights grounded, while the BBC (2026) and the Mirror (2026) reported eight airports shut down. Soekarno-Hatta was the first to suspend operations Sunday morning (BBC News, 2026), and the Associated Press (2026) confirmed cancellations at Jakarta’s airport and others.

By mid-afternoon, 516 flight movements had been affected — 202 of them at Soekarno-Hatta alone, touching about 22,800 passengers (CBS News, 2026). The transport ministry later cited 712 affected flights and pressed airlines to speed up refunds and share timely information (BBC News, 2026).

Disruptions hit routes to Singapore, Doha, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur (BBC News, 2026). The closure list also included flights from Australia’s Qantas (News.com.au, 2026).

No tsunami warning, but ash reaches people

There were no casualties and no evacuation orders; the nearest settlement sits more than 10 miles from the crater. Authorities nonetheless told people to stay at least 2 miles clear of it (CBS News, 2026). No tsunami warning was issued (BBC News, 2026).

Ashfall still caused problems on the ground. Several schools cancelled activities Saturday, and some fishermen called off trips after students and crews reported sore eyes; one resident told the newspaper Kompas it felt like “small grains of sand” (BBC News, 2026). Indonesia’s health minister urged affected residents to stay indoors and wear face masks against respiratory, eye and skin risks (BBC News, 2026).

Why this volcano is closely watched

Anak Krakatau is the offspring of Krakatau, whose monumental 1883 eruption triggered a period of global cooling (CBS News, 2026). The volcano’s 2018 eruption generated a tsunami that killed at least 430 people in Sumatra and Java (CBS News, 2026).

Researchers believe volcanic activity in 2018 triggered an underwater landslide that collapsed a large chunk of Anak Krakatau’s southwest slope and displaced a large volume of water (CBS News, 2026). Lukman F. Laisa, Indonesia’s director general of civil aviation, said “safety remains our top priority in every operational decision” — and warned that cascading disruptions to aircraft rotations, fleet availability and terminal capacity could outlast the ash cloud itself (CBS News, 2026).

2. Los Angeles County, California: M3.2 earthquake under Compton draws 623 felt reports

A preliminary magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck at 12:13 a.m. Sunday, about 2 miles south-southeast of Compton and 6.1 miles north of Long Beach, at a depth of roughly 8 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (International Business Times, 2026). Within hours, 623 people had filed “Did You Feel It?” reports describing weak shaking from La Habra, Seal Beach, Los Angeles, Bell and La Mirada (International Business Times, 2026).

A relatively shallow depth — about 8 miles — can make a modest earthquake felt more widely at the surface, which helps explain reports from across the basin (International Business Times, 2026). The quake follows a magnitude 3.2 recorded near Ontario in San Bernardino County on Sept. 2 and a separate magnitude 3.4 in the same area, part of a series of small tremors across Southern California in recent weeks (International Business Times, 2026).

The Compton area averages roughly 2,400 earthquakes of all magnitudes each year, though the vast majority are too small to feel (International Business Times, 2026). The region sits atop a network of active fault systems that make it one of the most seismically monitored areas in the country (International Business Times, 2026).

3. Gainesville, Florida: Sinkhole closes Southwest Fourth Avenue

A sinkhole opened along Southwest Fourth Avenue at Sixth Street in Gainesville, and public works crews and police closed the area while working to fill it Saturday afternoon [1]. City Commissioner Casey Willits posted a photo of the hole on social media and urged residents to stay clear of the street after their post-game plans [1].

What Scientists Are Saying

Indonesia’s Geological Agency detected Anak Krakatau’s unrest from Friday, and its Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation tracked ash spreading across Jakarta and Lampung province (CBS News, 2026). The meteorological agency BMKG measured ash at 20,000 feet (6,000 m) east over Java and 50,000 feet (15,000 m) west over Sumatra, and confirmed no tsunami warning was in effect (BBC News, 2026).

The USGS located Sunday’s Compton earthquake at magnitude 3.2 and collected hundreds of citizen reports through its “Did You Feel It?” system (International Business Times, 2026). Research linking Anak Krakatau’s 2018 tsunami to an underwater landslide and slope collapse explains why scientists track this volcano’s activity so closely (CBS News, 2026).

This counts detections, not shaking: Alaska and California run far denser sensor networks than most of the world, so they record small quakes that would go unrecorded elsewhere. Regions are USGS’s own place labels, which mix US states with countries.

Kemetic Minds Analysis

“Extreme Earth Changes Watch” exists to track real, agency-verified geophysical and weather events without the hype — every event here is tied to a named source: USGS, NOAA, the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, or mainstream news, rather than an anonymous social post. Earthquakes, volcanic activity, and extreme weather happen somewhere on Earth every single day; this roundup exists to separate genuinely unusual or record-setting activity from routine background activity, using the same scientific sourcing bar every day.

Investigative Methodology: This roundup is generated on a fixed daily schedule (morning, America/Chicago) from live wire sources. Every claim is grounded in fetched source text with a numbered citation, and this series only reports events backed by an official agency (USGS, NOAA, Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program) or mainstream news coverage — never anonymous social-media claims alone. No event is asserted to be connected to another, or framed as prophetic/supernatural, unless a cited scientist or agency source explicitly says so. Every video embed is verified to be a real, existing video via YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint before publication. No Wikipedia sources are used.
