Global Conflict | July 31, 2026

Tel Aviv has had a demonstration nearly every week this month. Since mid-July 2026, three separate protest movements have converged on the city at once: tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Israelis breaching a military prison fence over a draft-dodging arrest, hundreds of left-wing demonstrators arrested on Kaplan Street over West Bank settler violence, and the Democrats party launching its election campaign at Rabin Square with a promise to keep “criminal suspects” out of the next government. Here’s what’s actually happening on the ground, real video from the Kaplan Street march, and what the pileup means heading into an election year.

Three Protest Movements, One Month

The settler-violence marches. On July 25, eight left-wing activists were arrested in Tel Aviv during a demonstration against a surge in West Bank settler violence[1]. The next day, police arrested a further nine people at a follow-up Kaplan Street rally, where the left-wing Hadash party and the Mothers Against Violence group said more than 200 people took part[2]. The marches continued into July 29, with demonstrators again gathering on Kaplan Street — chanting against settler violence and, in at least one case, marching behind masked participants depicting Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu[3].

The protests followed a deadly confrontation in the West Bank village of Tal, near Nablus: roughly 30 settlers entered the village attempting to break into homes, residents confronted them, and gunfire left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead. The Netanyahu government responded with a large-scale military operation, arresting nearly 50 Palestinians in Tal alone and raiding roughly 70 homes; the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society said more than 80 Palestinians were detained across the West Bank in the operation’s wake, calling it “collective punishment”[2].

Behind closed doors.

According to Channel 13 reporting cited by the Times of Israel, Netanyahu himself described violent settlers as a “metastasizing cancer” during internal cabinet deliberations earlier this year, as the government debated — and largely kept confidential — a plan to curb settler extremism in the West Bank[4].

The Draft-Dodging Crisis Came First

The settler-violence marches followed an even larger wave of unrest. On July 18, protesters rallied nationwide against the Netanyahu government’s handling of Haredi draft-evasion laws[5]. Two days later, an estimated 25,000 ultra-Orthodox Israelis protested outside the Beit Lid military prison and at the attorney general’s home over the arrest of a yeshiva student for draft dodging — at one point breaching the base’s perimeter fence and clashing with military police[6].

That same week, the Democrats party — formed from a merger of Israel’s Labor and Meretz parties — launched its election campaign at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, pledging to keep “criminal suspects” out of office and demanding control of the education and justice ministries in any future coalition, while its speakers also condemned settler violence and called for dismantling settler outposts. Protesters elsewhere have separately accused Netanyahu of turning Israel into a “dictatorship”[7].

What This Means

None of these three movements are new by themselves — Haredi draft protests, Kaplan Street demonstrations, and Israeli election-season party launches have all recurred for years. What’s different this July is that they’re stacking on top of each other in the same city inside a matter of weeks, right as the Netanyahu coalition heads toward an election year already strained by the draft-law standoff with its ultra-Orthodox partners. A government that needs Haredi parties to survive a no-confidence vote, but is simultaneously being accused by its own base of tolerating “Jewish terror” in the West Bank, has very little room to satisfy either flank without losing the other. Whether the settler-violence protests translate into actual policy change — the kind Netanyahu reportedly wants to keep quiet rather than public — is the open question the reporting above does not yet answer.

Kemetic Minds Analysis

The most telling detail in this month’s protest wave isn’t the crowd size on Kaplan Street — it’s that Netanyahu’s own private language about settler violence (“metastasizing cancer”) is harsher than almost anything his government has said in public. That gap between private acknowledgment and public inaction is exactly what’s now visible on the street from three different directions at once: the ultra-Orthodox base furious over enforcement of the draft, the secular left furious over non-enforcement against settlers, and an opposition party betting an election can be won on both grievances simultaneously.
