Ending cholera requires more than responding to outbreaks.[1]

Key Facts

  • Disease: Cholera
  • Where: Location not yet reported
  • Status: Reported by ECDC[2]
  • Outlets reporting: 2
  • Official source: ECDC

The Threat

It requires protecting the communities most at risk before the next outbreak occurs.[1]

In Malawi, the successful implementation of a second-dose Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign in Blantyre has demonstrated how strategic investment in prevention can save lives, strengthen community resilience, and accelerate progress toward cholera elimination.[1]

The August 2026 campaign marked the third phase of Malawi’s OCV response during the 2025-2026 cholera outbreak, building on earlier reactive vaccination efforts implemented in hotspot districts.[1]

While the initial phases focused on rapidly interrupting transmission during the outbreak, the Blantyre campaign was designed to provide longer-term protection to populations living in communities that continued to face the highest risk of cholera transmission.[1]

ECDC says: The risk of cholera infection for travellers visiting these countries remains low, even though sporadic importation of cases to the EU/EEA is possible. Overview Update Since 28 September 2026 and as of 27 October 2026, 42 136 new cholera cases, including 501 new deaths, have been reported worldwide.[2]

Transmission Method

What the reports say about exposure and spread: Following the OCV interventions, cholera transmission declined steadily, with the epidemic curve showing a sustained downward trend and the disappearance of large case surges.[1]

How cholera spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Cholera comes from eating food or drinking water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Most people who are infected have no symptoms but can still spread the bacteria in their faeces for 1 to 10 days.[3]

Affected Regions

Places named in the reports: Malawi, Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda.

  • Targeting five Priority Areas for Multisectoral Interventions (PAMIs), namely Chemusa, Chirimba, Chilobwe, Suya, and Mpemba, the campaign reached 186,108 people and achieved 100% administrative coverage, ensuring that communities previously vaccinated during the response phase received a second dose to strengthen and prolong immunity against cholera.[1]
  • The five countries reporting the highest number of new cases are Nigeria (20 263), Democratic Republic of the Congo (9 236), South Sudan (7 226), Cameroon (2 381) and Burundi (737).[2]
  • The five countries reporting the highest number of new deaths are Democratic Republic of the Congo (288), Nigeria (114), Cameroon (67), Zambia (18) and Yemen (7).[2]

Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook

There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure cholera. Cholera can kill within hours if it is not treated. Most patients can be treated with oral rehydration solution; severe cases need intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and antibiotics. An oral cholera vaccine helps prevent it. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.

The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:

  • Drink safe water and use basic sanitation.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • In outbreak areas, ask whether the oral cholera vaccine is available.

What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.

The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.

What Mwebantu Reports

THIRTY people have died from cholera since the outbreak began in July, with 1,622 cases recorded as of 28 October, Minister of Health Professor Roma Chilengi has told Parliament. Prof. Chilengi said the cases were recorded between 28 July and 28 October 2026, including 228 laboratory-confirmed cases.[4]
