As reported by Al Jazeera:

Exit polls are expected soon after voting closes late on Tuesday, but a final verdict might take days.

Israelis are voting in a closely watched election to decide on the direction of the country, three years after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel that set off the genocidal war on Gaza.

The first election since those attacks comes at a time when Israel’s pogroms in the occupied West Bank have escalated, and amid mounting tensions with several of its neighbours, many of whom it has attacked in the past three years.

But the vote also comes amid growing domestic questions that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces over alleged failures that allowed the October 7 attack, his government’s handling of efforts to retrieve captives taken to Gaza, alleged corruption and disputes over ultra-Orthodox military service.

In final polls published Friday, Netanyahu’s coalition is expected to be neck and neck with – or trail slightly behind – the opposition bloc led by former Israeli military chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot.[1]

On the record

In a post on X this morning, the Israeli prime minister wrote “right-wing voters, this is an emergency hour” as he urged them to get out and vote to counter any left electoral gains.[2]

The numbers in the reporting

50 seats
According to Israeli news outlet Haaretz, which has collated polls from Israeli news channels, as of Friday, an average of Channels 11, 12 and 13 predicts Netanyahu’s bloc will win 50 seats while Eisenkot’s opposition bloc will take 54 seats.[1]
1,200
It was on Netanyahu’s watch that Hamas militants broke out from Gaza three years ago to kill nearly 1,200 people, the majority of them civilians, on the deadliest day in Israel’s history.[2]
120 seats
The Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset, has 120 seats in all, so 61 is the mark that a grouping needs to reach a majority.[1]
1,431
The report noted that between the 10 October ceasefire in 2025 and 30 September 2026, Israeli attacks killed at least 1,431 Palestinian people in Gaza, including 300 children and 130 women.[2]

What The Guardian reports

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the Israeli elections.

Polls have opened in the first election since the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023, Israel’s subsequent destruction of Gaza, and the launch of its war with the US against Iran.

Most polling shows prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition will lose its majority in the 120-seat Knesset, but the opposition bloc will probably also fall short of the 61 seats needed to form a government.[2]

What is not yet confirmed

  • Israel has dismissed the findings of the report and has denied committing genocide in Gaza.[2]

What the official record says

UN says, in its own words:

“This is bound to have devastating effects on the season.” OHCHR has documented more than 160 settler attacks in the first two weeks of October alone, involving live ammunition, arson, crop theft and damage to olive groves.[3]

UN says, in its own words:

He said Israel’s expansion of territorial control in Gaza “continues to result in the killing and harming of Palestinian civilians who approach or cross the “yellow line” – the line Israeli forces withdrew to under the October 2025 ceasefire agreement.[4]

the Usembassy site (il) says, in its own words:

Embassy Jerusalem – October 23, 2026 The Travel Advisory for Israel was updated on October 23, 2026, to reflect the threat of increased Iranian-supported Houthi regional aggression.[5]
