Earth Changes · Daily Report · October 19, 2026, 6:30 AM CDT

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck 186 km NW of Port-Olry, Vanuatu at 7:49 a.m. UTC on Oct. 19, about 10 km (≈6 miles) below the surface, the U.S. Geological Survey reports[1]. The USGS PAGER system rates the expected impact GREEN. It was one of 24 quakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in the past day.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Trudy is churning in the eastern Pacific with top winds near 60 mph and a central pressure of 999 millibars, moving west at 6 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.[2]

Elsewhere, Great Sitkin volcano is at alert level WATCH (aviation color code ORANGE), the Alaska Volcano Observatory says. Its latest update: “Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.”[3]

Today at a Glance

  • 24 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater, the largest M6.0
  • 1 active tropical system: Tropical Storm Trudy
  • 16 severe or extreme U.S. weather alerts
  • 4 U.S. volcanoes above normal, including Great Sitkin
  • 3 sinkhole reports in the news

1. Extreme Weather

Tropical storms and hurricanes

  • Tropical Storm Trudy (eastern Pacific): top winds near 60 mph, moving west at 6 mph. Latest advisory.[2]

Across the United States, the National Weather Service has 16 alerts rated severe or extreme in effect.[4]

Alert Number States
Winter Storm Warning 4 AK
Freeze Warning 3 KY, MD, PA, VA
Coastal Flood Warning 2 NC
Flood Warning 2 FL, GA
Flood Watch 2 AK
Winter Storm Watch 2 AK
High Wind Watch 1 AK

The Storm Prediction Center says no severe thunderstorm areas are forecast today.[5]

Around the world, GDACS logged 61 wildfire, 5 flood, 1 earthquake notices in the past two days, all at its lowest (Green) level.[6]

2. Earthquakes

The USGS recorded 24 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in the past 24 hours.[7] The strongest:

PAGER is the USGS estimate of likely deaths and damage: GREEN means little or none expected, RED means extensive. A dash means none was issued.

Earlier this week: The USGS is also continuing to monitor ongoing aftershocks and impacts from significant earthquakes recorded over the past seven days:[8]

3. Volcanoes

In the United States, 4 volcanoes are above normal background activity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s observatories:

Volcano Alert / aviation code Latest word from scientists
Great Sitkin Watch / Orange Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.[3]
Ahyi Seamount Advisory / Yellow Plumes of discolored water seen in satellite imagery; no significant geophysical signals.[9]
Kilauea Advisory / Yellow The Halema'uma'u eruption of Kīlauea is currently paused after episode 55 fountaining ended yesterday at 9:03 a.m. HST. Summit reinflation continues today following the end of the fountaining.[10]
Shishaldin Advisory / Yellow Low-level unrest continues.[3]

Alert levels run Normal, Advisory, Watch, Warning. Aviation codes run Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.

4. Sinkholes

No government agency publishes a live national sinkhole feed, so these come from today’s local news:

  • Daily Hampshire Gazette reports, “EASTHAMPTON — Demolition of several century-old mill structures on Ferry Street is expected to begin within weeks, even as crews work to determine what caused a large sinkhole that opened in the middle of the street earlier this month.”[11]
  • Hoodline reports, “A sinkhole opened near South 22nd”[12]
  • The Citizen reports, “FOLLOW-UP: Snake Road sinkhole still awaits repairs despite June deadline On August 28, 2023, the Boksburg Advertiser reported that the delay had been attributed to a stalemate between the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) and the Council for Geoscience (CGS) over who should take responsibility for the repairs: the municipality or the provincial Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).”[13]

Other natural-hazard video from the past day, from news organizations:

Video: Al Jazeera English, October 19, 2026 — “Indonesia battles worst forest fires and toxic haze in 11 years”. Also in the news. Picked because its title names a natural hazard; it may not be covered in the data above.

Video: Al Jazeera English, October 19, 2026 — “Mexican protesters demanding clean water storm state congress”. Also in the news.

5. What the Experts Say

These are the words of the scientists and forecasters who watch these hazards for a living, quoted exactly.

“Satellite imagery indicates that Trudy began rapidly weakening about 12 hours ago, and during these past 12 hours, most of the deep convection has dissipated. However, there are still small areas of deep convection in the eastern semicircle of the tropical storm. A 19/0359 UTC ASCAT-C pass had a peak wind retrieval of 45 kt, and the latest DPRINT, DMINT and AiDT estimates have fallen to the 46-55 kt range. The initial intensity was lowered to 55 kt at 06Z, with a 09Z advisory intensity of 50 kt.”

— Forecaster Hagen, National Hurricane Center, on Tropical Storm Trudy[14]

“Severe thunderstorms are not forecast across the U.S. today or tonight.”

— NOAA Storm Prediction Center[5]

“The eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most sesimically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of New Zealand, the 3000 km long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It includes an oceanic transform (the Macquarie Ridge), two oppositely verging subduction zones (Puysegur and Hikurangi), and a transpressive continental transform, the Alpine Fault through South Island, New Zealand.”

— U.S. Geological Survey, “Seismotectonics of the Eastern Margin of the Australia Plate,” on the region around the M6.0 quake[15]

“Lava continues to erupt slowly within the summit crater of Great Sitkin Volcano. A few small earthquakes and rockfalls were detected in the past day. Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed in a partly cloudy satellite view, otherwise satellite and webcam views were obscured by clouds.”

— Alaska Volcano Observatory, on Great Sitkin[3]

“Plumes of discolored water were seen in the ocean above Ahyi on October 9 and 11 this past week. Discolored greenish water was visible drifting more than 7 km from the summit of Ahyi. These plumes are likely associated with degassing and hydrothermal activity at the summit of the underwater volcano.”

— Northern Mariana Islands, on Ahyi Seamount[9]

“Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or other rocks that can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground. Sinkholes are dramatic because the land usually stays intact for a while until the underground spaces just get too big.”

— U.S. Geological Survey Water Science School, on why sinkholes form[16]

How to Prepare

  • Keep a basic kit: water (one gallon per person per day for several days), food, a battery or hand-crank radio, a whistle, a dust mask and phone chargers.[17]
  • Get alerts: Wireless Emergency Alerts need no sign-up; the FEMA app, NOAA Weather Radio, the USGS Earthquake Notification Service and the USGS Volcano Notification Service are free.
  • Floods: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot can sweep a car away.[18]
  • Earthquakes: Drop, Cover and Hold On.[19]
  • Download the checklist: Be Ready: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Extreme Weather and Sinkholes (PDF), with today’s active hazards first.
