Key Facts
- The U.S. military is sending roughly 9,000 troops aboard a group of ships to the Middle East, a U.S. official told the Associated Press on October 1, 2026.[1]
- The group is more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines, led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group.[1]
- Mediaite reported the same move as 10,000 more troops and attributed that figure to the Wall Street Journal.[2]
- Trump told reporters Thursday that early indications link Iran to the FlyDubai co-pilot who attacked his captain on Wednesday: “based on what I’m hearing, [the answer is] ‘yes,’ but we’re working on it right now.” His “hit very hard” remark came in that exchange. He gave no details.[1]
- None of the reporting cited here says troops are going into Iran: the forces are headed to the region aboard ships.[1]
- Iran’s Press TV and Mehr News Agency published defiant statements from Iranian officials on October 1. They appear to predate the announcement, so they are not a reply to it.[3]
Updated October 1, 2026: added the White House exchange on the FlyDubai attack, Trump’s Texas remarks and four videos.
The U.S. military is sending a third aircraft carrier and roughly 9,000 troops to the Middle East as President Donald Trump warns that new strikes on Iran could be coming.[1]

What the Associated Press Reported
A U.S. official said the troops are aboard a group of ships heading to the Middle East. The official spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military operations.[1]
The group includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and an amphibious ready group built around the USS Makin Island. It carries over 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines.[1]
Three carriers could be in the region by late October. The USS George H.W. Bush and the USS George Washington are there now, along with the USS Boxer amphibious ready group.[1]
With the personnel already in place, the AP says the move would bring the U.S. naval presence to an unusually high number of more than 20,000 sailors and Marines, and hundreds of aircraft.[1]
What Trump Said
The remark that made headlines came at the White House on Thursday, when a reporter asked whether the FlyDubai attacker had any links to Tehran. The co-pilot stabbed his captain and tried to crash an Israel-bound flight on Wednesday.[1]
“I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is ‘yes,’ but we’re working on it right now,” Trump said, without offering details. He added that if the link is established, the United States would retaliate.[1]
“Oh, they’ll be hit very hard, don’t worry,” he told reporters. “You just ask them. They know what happened. They’ll be hit very hard.”[1]

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News earlier that day that investigators believe the suspect underwent “Islamist, radical indoctrination,” also without giving details.[1] No Iranian link has been confirmed in anything we have read.
In an interview with Time magazine published Thursday, Trump said it is “possible” he will ramp up bombing in Iran after the November 3 U.S. elections.[1]
He said he rejected Iran’s latest ceasefire proposal because “things that I wouldn’t have approved a year ago I wouldn’t have today.” As an example, he cited an Iranian offer to “open up” the Strait of Hormuz, but called the overall proposal “not good enough.”[1]

Later Thursday, at a truck manufacturing plant in Texas, he said more. Tasnim, an Iranian outlet, posted a clip of those remarks to its English-language Telegram channel and summarized them. In the clip, Trump says that when a deal is made with Iran, “it’s very possible that they won’t honor it.”[6]
Video: Tasnim News Agency (English Telegram channel), October 1, 2026. The 36-second clip shows Trump speaking at a podium and carries a “Warpront Witness” watermark; its on-screen captions match the remarks Tasnim quotes. Tasnim is an Iranian outlet and its caption is editorial, so we use the clip for what Trump says and not for Tasnim’s framing.
What Iran’s Outlets Are Saying
We did not find an Iranian outlet reacting to this deployment itself. The newest items on Press TV, Mehr and Tehran Times pre-date the AP report. What they carried on October 1 and the day before is Iran’s stated position on U.S. military pressure.
Tasnim did react to Trump, though not to the deployment. Its Telegram post, published about 22:50 UTC on October 1, headlines Trump’s Texas remarks “Iran is ready to surrender” and calls him “the U.S. terrorist president.” The loaded wording is Tasnim’s, not Trump’s. The post quotes him saying “We can easily win now,” and that he believes the U.S. “will win immediately after the election, but maybe even before it.”[6]
Press TV and Mehr both reported a statement by Iran’s acting defense minister, Brigadier General Majid Ebn-e-Reza. He wrote on X on Thursday:[3]
“Do not hide the confusion in the White House behind imaginary war dramas. Public pressure, the exhaustion of US forces, and the rising costs of war have thrown your calculations into disarray.”
Press TV says the statement “apparently came in direct response” to Trump’s Time interview, in which Trump said Iran’s military had been destroyed.[3]
“Claims of the destruction of the defense industry change nothing,” Ebn-e-Reza added. “You will see Iranian capability and initiative on the battlefield and will feel its political impact.”[3]
Press TV also quoted Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, from Wednesday. Press TV’s account says he put the number of U.S. bases in the region at roughly half of what it used to be, with American forces relocating to aircraft carriers at least 500 kilometers from Iran.[3]
“The Americans have come to recognize Iran’s military capabilities and strength,” Mohebbi said.[3]
On September 30, Mehr quoted Brigadier General Ali Balali, an adviser to the commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force: “Today, in every operation, the armed forces launch as much as necessary, with power and determination, so that the enemy is disciplined and understands that the era of ‘hit and run’ is over.”[4]
The same day, Tehran Times reported that Defense Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Reza Talaei-Nik said Iran seeks peace and an end to the conflict, and that recognition of Iran’s legitimate rights and conditions would open the way to ending it.[5]
What Is Disputed or Unconfirmed
- The troop count. The AP says roughly 9,000. Mediaite’s headline says 10,000, attributed to the Wall Street Journal.[2]
- The source. The AP’s figure comes from an unnamed U.S. official.[1]
- Iran’s claims. That U.S. forces are exhausted and that Iran’s forces are more prepared are the statements of Iranian officials, carried by Iranian outlets. We have not independently verified them.
- Trump’s claims. His statements that Iran’s navy and air force are “gone” are likewise his own claims, which Press TV disputes.[3]
- The FlyDubai link. Trump said Iran appears to be involved, based on what he is hearing, and offered no evidence. Netanyahu likewise gave no details. Neither claim is confirmed.[1]
- Iran’s response to the deployment. We found none yet. Tasnim’s reaction to Trump’s Texas remarks came out the same evening, but it does not mention the ships. This post will not describe one until an Iranian outlet or official reports it.
How to Verify This Yourself
Read the AP report as carried by KSAT. Read the Iranian statements at Press TV, Mehr News Agency Tasnim’s Telegram post and Tehran Times.
What to Watch
- When the carrier group arrives. The AP says three carriers could be in the region by late October.[1]
- Any decision after the November 3 elections. Trump told Time that escalation is “possible” then.[1]
- The first Iranian official statement that names the new deployment.

Investigative methodology: written by hand from the sources listed above, with the quoted wording checked against each outlet’s own page. Press TV, Mehr News Agency and Tehran Times are Iranian outlets, and what they report on Iran’s position is the position of Iranian officials, not independently verified fact. Nothing here is estimated or inferred. Where no Iranian response to the deployment had been published, the post says so.
