Extreme Earth Changes Watch — Daily Report — September 11, 2026
Anak Krakatau fired gas and ash as high as 50,000 feet over the Sunda Strait last week, grounding thousands of flights and closing eight airports across Java and Sumatra.
Half a world away, Kīlauea’s summit is inflating toward its 55th fountaining episode, and federal forecasters now expect the strongest El Niño ever measured.
Anak Krakatau erupted for more than 24 hours on September 5 and 6, sending ash to 20,000 feet east of the volcano and 50,000 feet west of it, according to Indonesia’s meteorological agency (Randolph, 2026). The eruption shut eight airports across Java and Sumatra and disrupted thousands of flights (Randolph, 2026). Copernicus Sentinel-5P tracked a sulfur dioxide plume extending hundreds of kilometres west over the Indian Ocean (EU Space Programme, 2026). USGS forecasts Kīlauea’s episode 55 lava fountaining for September 10 or 11, after 50 overflows from the north vent since September 7 [1]. NOAA reported the United States recorded its hottest summer on record in 2026, with a meteorological summer average of 74.4 degrees, 3 degrees above average [2]. Forecasters project this El Niño will peak around 4.1 degrees Celsius above average in December — about a degree higher than the record 2015 event (Washington Post, 2026).

1. Sunda Strait: Anak Krakatau’s 25-Hour Eruption
The volcano entered a period of sustained eruptive activity on September 4, 2026, lasting roughly 25 hours (EU Space Programme, 2026).
NASA’s Earthdata archive shows the NOAA-20 satellite’s VIIRS instrument catching white volcanic gas, steam, and a brown ash cloud on September 5. Aerosol index values in that data layer ranged from 10 to 20 or greater, the range that indicates ash suspended in the atmosphere (NASA Earthdata, 2026).
What the ash did to the air and the airlines
The Indonesian meteorological agency put the ash column at 20,000 feet to the east and 50,000 feet to the west (NASA Earthdata, 2026). Regional airline flights were grounded, and air quality turned very poor in surrounding regions, including the capital, Jakarta (NASA Earthdata, 2026).
Sentinel-5P imagery from September 6 shows the sulfur dioxide plume stretching hundreds of kilometres west over the Indian Ocean, with the highest concentrations shown in red tones (EU Space Programme, 2026). NASA–USGS Landsat 8 captured the ash billowing across the same ocean (Randolph, 2026).
Why this volcano gets watched closely
Anak Krakatau rose from the submerged caldera left by the 1883 Krakatoa eruption and formed a small island by 1930 (Randolph, 2026). Scientific American notes that a previous strong eruption of Anak Krakatau caused a catastrophic landslide and tsunami (Randolph, 2026).
That history is why eruptions here get satellite coverage within hours and aviation warnings within minutes. The question scientists will be tracking now is how long the current unrest persists.

2. Viral Video Prompts A Fact-Check
As eruption footage spread online, a fact-checking outlet published an examination titled “Volcano Erupts on Camera: Is This Real Anak Krakatau Footage, or AI?” (FactCrescendo, 2026).
No agency imagery was called into question — the NASA, NOAA, and Copernicus observations of the eruption are separate, instrument-based records. But the check is a reminder that dramatic eruption clips circulating during real events are not automatically real.

3. Kīlauea: 50 Overflows And Counting
Intermittent lava activity continued at Kīlauea’s summit Thursday morning, with no net change in summit inflation since the day before [1].
- Overflow count: 50 lava overflows from the north vent in Halemaʻumaʻu since September 7.
- Duration: Each overflow lasted 15 minutes to about 2 hours, separated by interludes of 15 minutes to 8 hours.
- Fountain height: A dome fountain feeding the overflows reached 15–30 feet (5–10 meters).
- Flow reach: One lava flow moved about a kilometer southwest of the north vent; another moved less than a kilometer northeast.
The most recent overflow ended at 1:17 a.m. HST Thursday, and the break since then is the second longest since precursory activity began on September 7 [1].
Why the forecast window matters
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory adjusted its forecast window for the start of episode 55 lava fountaining to between September 10 and September 11 [1]. Summit reinflation has been “very irregular” since episode 54 on August 25 and remains about 0.5 microradians below the level recorded at the start of that episode — the pressure threshold that has preceded past fountaining is not yet met [1].
Kīlauea remains at Volcano Alert Level WATCH with Aviation Color Code ORANGE [1]. Webcams showed intermittent glow in all three eruptive vents between overflows, with occasional flames and spatter from the south and west vents, though no overflows occurred there [1].

4. Malibu: Sinkhole Under A Celebrity Driveway Triggers Evacuations
A sinkhole beneath Nicolas Cage’s driveway in Malibu prompted the city to declare a local emergency and evacuate 31 properties on Sea Level Drive (The Real Deal, 2026).
The city remains on alert for other erosion problems in the Palisades fire burn areas along Pacific Coast Highway. A city spokesperson could not confirm Thursday whether more evacuations were possible (The Real Deal, 2026).
Compounding events, not one event
Last January’s Pacific Palisades fire damaged or destroyed nearly 8,000 residential and commercial structures, far more than the sinkhole evacuations (The Real Deal, 2026). But agents quoted by The Real Deal describe the two events stacking on the same coastline.
Engel & Völkers’ Dan Malka said a friend’s Malibu pool caved in about two months ago after ocean waves eroded a retaining wall, roughly two miles along the coast from this week’s sinkhole (The Real Deal, 2026). He expects insurance premiums to rise for coastal properties.
One Malka client who lost a home in the Palisades fire is now considering buying on the coastline; another lost a Malibu Park home in the 2018 Woolsey Fire and just finished rebuilding after seven years (The Real Deal, 2026).
The unanswered question for residents: whether the city broadens its evacuation zone as inspections continue along the burn scar.

5. Pacific: Forecasters Expect The Strongest El Niño On Record
Water temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific, where El Niño is measured, have been at record levels for more than three months straight (Washington Post, 2026).
Forecast data updated in early September projects ocean temperatures there reaching an average peak of about 4.1 degrees Celsius (7.4 degrees Fahrenheit) above average in December — about a degree higher than the record-breaking 2015 El Niño (Washington Post, 2026).

Tanzania Meteorological Authority Director General Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a said Pacific Ocean temperatures have already risen by more than 2.2 degrees Celsius and could exceed 3 degrees Celsius later this year (Daily News, 2026).
He listed the country’s major El Niño episodes as 1982/83, 1997/98, 2015/16 and 2023/24 (Daily News, 2026). Tanzania’s flood history repeatedly hits the same places: the northern coast including Dar es Salaam, Coast and Tanga regions; the Lake Victoria Basin; and the southern highlands (Daily News, 2026).
Climate experts quoted by the outlet caution that El Niño is only part of the story — the Indian Ocean Dipole, regional weather systems and local atmospheric conditions drove some of the country’s worst floods, including in 2011, a non-El Niño year (Daily News, 2026).

6. United States: Hottest Summer On Record
The United States recorded its hottest summer on record in 2026, breaking a record that had stood for more than a century, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [2].
NOAA found the average temperature for meteorological summer was 74.4 degrees, 3 degrees above average [2].
