Alaska recorded a magnitude 6.3 earthquake on Sept. 3 south of Nikolski — the largest in a swarm that has now produced eight quakes of magnitude 5 or greater in one week (Newsminer, 2026).

The same week, a coastal sinkhole forced 31 Malibu homes to evacuate, and a suspected chemical pipe leak killed fish in a South Korean stream.

  • Alaska’s monitoring network recorded about 700 earthquakes statewide in the week of Sept. 9, including a magnitude 6.3 south of Nikolski in the Aleutians [1].
  • The Nikolski swarm began Aug. 31; eight earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater occurred this week alone [1].
  • A sinkhole on Malibu’s Sea Level Drive grew to roughly 25 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide by Tuesday evening, prompting evacuations of 31 homes [2].
  • Seven Malibu residences were red-tagged, with 24 more flagged for loss of safe vehicle access [2].
  • A fish die-off in Bucheon, South Korea, followed a suspected coagulant leak from a damaged buried pipe near a water treatment plant (Herald Corp, 2026).
  • El Niño is weakening the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season and may affect North Carolina’s winter, one report said [3].

1. Alaska: A Magnitude 6.3 Anchors a 700-Earthquake Week

The largest event was a magnitude 6.3 on Sept. 3, south of Nikolski in the Aleutian Islands (Newsminer, 2026). It is part of a swarm that started Aug. 31.

A swarm is a cluster of earthquakes in a small area with no clear main shock. Alaska typically tracks a few every year, and they are common along the Alaska–Aleutian subduction zone.

Why the ground keeps moving

The Alaska Earthquake Center lists several drivers. The most common is fluid rising from the downgoing plate, which migrates into and along a fault, weakens it, and triggers clusters of quakes.

Changes in fault properties and differences in stress along a fault are also commonly associated with localized swarms. Some regions repeatedly generate swarms instead of large earthquakes.

Swarm sequences in Alaska can last weeks to years — so the Nikolski cluster may not be finished. Analysts review every event in a swarm to help scientists interpret how and why swarms form [1].

2. Malibu: A 30-by-60-Foot Sinkhole and 31 Homes Ordered Out

The city of Malibu declared a local emergency and issued evacuation orders for 31 homes after a sinkhole opened in the driveway of an oceanfront residence on the 31600 block of Sea Level Drive [2].

Real estate records list the property as owned by actor Nicolas Cage, according to the same report. A representative for Cage could not immediately be reached for comment.

What the crater did to the street

Fire and sheriff’s crews responded around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday. By Tuesday evening the hole was roughly 25 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide [2].

Aerial coverage described the collapse as reaching about 25 to 30 feet [3]. Seven residences were red-tagged for hazardous conditions; another 24 were being red-tagged because safe vehicle access was gone.

Gas was shut off in the affected area, and a temporary shelter opened at Malibu High School at 30215 Morning View Drive.

Where the water came from

Hurricane Marie stayed well offshore of Southern California over Labor Day weekend, but its large swells drove dangerous surf and rip currents, with waves reaching around 10 feet in some areas [2].

City officials warned conditions would likely worsen with high tides and rain from Tropical Storm Marie. The intact roadway is too narrow for fire engines and other large apparatus — a problem that does not resolve when the weather clears.

3. Bucheon, South Korea: Fish Die-Off Traced to a Suspected Pipe Leak

Dead fish and foam were reported Sunday in Bereune Stream in Yeowol-dong, Ojeong-gu, Bucheon (Herald Corp, 2026). City departments collected the fish and pollutants and began cleanup and containment.

The city installed containment nets and absorbent mats at six points along the stream, plus barriers and temporary water-blocking walls where contaminated water was suspected of entering. Pumps diverted contaminated water into sewage pipes.

What tests have and haven’t found

Water quality tests so far detected no heavy metals, but the stream’s pH measured between 5 and 6. Specialized institutions are expected to confirm the exact cause of the fish deaths only after a detailed investigation.

On Monday, while tracing the pollutant’s route, the city found possible damage to a buried chemical supply pipe near the Kkachiul Water Treatment Plant — a suspected coagulant leak. The city then blocked the pathway and recovered the chemical.

Officials said tap water safety was unaffected, but residents remain anxious (Herald Corp, 2026). The unanswered question is how long the damaged pipe leaked before anyone noticed.

4. Sunda Strait: Anak Krakatau Reported to Have Trapped 340,000

An aggregator report states that Anak Krakatau, rebuilding itself in the Sunda Strait since the late 1920s, has now trapped more than 340,000 people, up from 170,000 stranded in an earlier episode (Attack of the Fanboy, 2026).

The item says the volcano has been regrowing for roughly a century, decades after its parent volcano’s catastrophic 1883 eruption.

Treat this one carefully

The report does not name an agency, a date, or a location for the 170,000 and 340,000 figures. It carries no monitoring data and no quoted scientist.

Until a national geological survey or the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program posts matching information, this figure should be read as a headline claim rather than a verified count. Volcanic activity at Anak Krakatau has repeatedly produced aviation and evacuation advisories in past years, so the underlying hazard is real even where the numbers here are not yet sourced.

5. Atlantic: El Niño Takes Steam Out of Hurricane Season

El Niño is suppressing the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season and may influence North Carolina’s winter, one forecast discussion reported [3].

That same outlook flagged a likely record-setting tropical week and a dust plume traveling over the Caribbean — dry, dusty air that can further inhibit storm development.

The stakes are local and concrete: a quieter Atlantic does not mean a quiet coast, since a single landfalling system in an otherwise slow season still produces the same storm surge and rainfall. North Carolina’s winter outcome remains the open question.

What Scientists Are Saying

The Alaska Earthquake Center describes swarms as routine at the Alaska–Aleutian subduction zone, driven most often by fluids rising off the downgoing plate that weaken faults and trigger clusters [1].

In Bucheon, city officials said the incident appeared to stem from a facility management failure rather than a simple, temporary water quality problem, and called for identifying the pollution cause to prevent recurrence (Herald Corp, 2026).

Separately, residents and scientists in Wisconsin said candidates should address climate change ahead of the November election, tying the issue to extreme weather events [3]. That framing — extreme events as a policy question, not a prophecy — is the standard one in the scientific literature.

How To Track These Events

Three public agencies publish free, real-time monitoring that anyone can check against news reports.

  • The U.S. Geological Survey posts global earthquake locations, magnitudes and depths within minutes, plus a public feed of sequences like the Nikolski swarm.
  • NOAA issues hurricane outlooks, marine warnings and space-weather alerts, including the surf and swell products relevant to the Malibu collapse.
  • The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program maintains the definitive weekly volcanic activity report — the fastest way to confirm or dismiss claims about Anak Krakatau.

If a number in a headline cannot be matched to one of those three, wait for the match before repeating it.

This counts detections, not shaking: Alaska and California run far denser sensor networks than most of the world, so they record small quakes that would go unrecorded elsewhere. Regions are USGS’s own place labels, which mix US states with countries.

Kemetic Minds Analysis

“Extreme Earth Changes Watch” exists to track real, agency-verified geophysical and weather events without the hype — every event here is tied to a named source: USGS, NOAA, the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, or mainstream news, rather than an anonymous social post. Earthquakes, volcanic activity, and extreme weather happen somewhere on Earth every single day; this roundup exists to separate genuinely unusual or record-setting activity from routine background activity, using the same scientific sourcing bar every day.

Investigative Methodology: This roundup is generated on a fixed daily schedule (morning, America/Chicago) from live wire sources. Every claim is grounded in fetched source text with a numbered citation, and this series only reports events backed by an official agency (USGS, NOAA, Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program) or mainstream news coverage — never anonymous social-media claims alone. No event is asserted to be connected to another, or framed as prophetic/supernatural, unless a cited scientist or agency source explicitly says so. Every video embed is verified to be a real, existing video via YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint before publication. No Wikipedia sources are used.
