KEMETIC MINDS — BREAKING NEWS
September 01, 2026

The U.S. military said Tuesday it launched new strikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran, following what it described as attempted attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and on American service members deployed to the region (Al Jazeera, 2026; Reuters, 2026).

Key Facts

  • The strikes began at 12 p.m. ET Tuesday and target IRGC targets, the U.S. military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on X, without providing further details (Reuters, 2026).
  • The action comes after two supertankers carrying Saudi oil were struck by “unknown projectiles” within minutes of each other late Monday while transiting outbound through the Strait of Hormuz, according to shipping intelligence and tracking firms Marisks and Kpler (Reuters, 2026).
  • Iranian semiofficial news agency Tasnim reported explosions in southern Iran, including in Konarak, Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island (Al Jazeera, 2026).
  • The strikes follow an exchange of attacks on Sunday, when the U.S. military struck Larak Island in southern Iran and Tehran retaliated with missile launches against a base housing American troops in Jordan (Al Jazeera, 2026).
  • All crew members aboard the two struck tankers were reported safe (Reuters, 2026).

Tanker Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz

According to Marisks, the Saudi-flagged very large crude carrier (VLCC) Sidr was struck by unknown projectiles about 31 kilometres northeast of Khasab, Oman, at around 3:52 p.m. ET Monday. Minutes later, the Liberian-flagged VLCC Senegal Prosperity was reportedly struck by three unknown projectiles approximately 31 km east of Khasab (Reuters, 2026). Each tanker had loaded two million barrels of Saudi crude at the Juaymah terminal last week, Kpler data showed (Reuters, 2026).

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported three projectiles striking a tanker in the same location as it sailed out of the Strait of Hormuz, in what appeared to be the same incident (Reuters, 2026).

“The near-simultaneous incidents represent a further escalation in the threat environment within the Omani corridor,” Marisks said (Reuters, 2026).

Background to the Strikes

CENTCOM said the strikes “follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region” (Al Jazeera, 2026). The fighting on Sunday marked the first attacks by both countries since July (Al Jazeera, 2026).

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump had said it was shifting its strategy from military strikes to intense economic pressure on Iran, including a naval siege on Iranian ports and threats of secondary sanctions against Tehran’s trade partners (Al Jazeera, 2026). Iran continues to assert its control over Hormuz, a major artery for the global energy trade, while Trump and his aides have said the U.S. is managing to get millions of barrels of oil through the strait daily despite the Iranian blockade (Al Jazeera, 2026). Attacks on ships around the strait have been reported almost daily, according to Al Jazeera (2026).

Al Jazeera reported that Iran has previously responded to similar U.S. attacks, so the strikes risk sparking a new cycle of fighting (Al Jazeera, 2026).

What’s Still Unconfirmed

The source of the projectiles that struck the two tankers is not confirmed in the available reporting; shipping firms describe them as “unknown projectiles” (Reuters, 2026). CENTCOM did not provide further details on the strikes (Reuters, 2026). Explosion reports in southern Iran come from Tasnim, Iran’s semiofficial news agency, and the available sourcing does not include independent confirmation or an official Iranian government statement responding to Tuesday’s strikes (Al Jazeera, 2026).
