5. Hate Crimes: Man Pleads Not Guilty in Alleged Hate Crime Against University of Kentucky Employee

Damian Hisle, 52, pleaded not guilty Monday in Fayette District Court to harassment and third-degree terroristic threatening charges in an alleged hate crime against a University of Kentucky employee.^[5]

The judge appointed Hisle a public defender after he said he could not afford an attorney.
Court records say a Muslim woman told police Hisle spat in her face and threatened to kill her as she walked to her vehicle near UK Hospital.
Three days after the alleged Aug. 11 incident, Hisle was charged with terroristic threatening in a separate encounter at Good Samaritan Hospital, where a worker said he threatened to cut off her head with a long-handled axe.
Hisle’s bond was left at $5,000 and another hearing was scheduled for Sept. 2.
Fayette County court records show previous charges against Hisle dating back to 1999, including terroristic threatening, menacing, alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct.
