Methodology: CDC/FDA do not publish a live public
per-state case-count API for this outbreak, so this map combines CDC’s national surveillance
summary (updated September 8, 2026, covering cases acquired since May 1, 2026), a CDC
outbreak-map data export (the 9-state Taco Bell/Taylor Farms de Mexico lettuce cluster, as of
July 23, 2026), a CDC-derived third-party tracker (GenomicEpi.com, August 1, 2026), and state
health department reporting where published. Two different figures exist per state and
are kept separate rather than merged: a “multistate cluster” count (cases specifically
tied to the Taco Bell lettuce investigation) and a “statewide total” (that state’s full reported
case count, which can be much larger — e.g. Michigan’s own outbreak, 14,718 cases as of
September 3 per MDHHS, is far bigger than its 931-case cluster subset). As of September 8, 2026,
CDC reported 19,595 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases (1,043 hospitalizations, 2 deaths); states
confirmed to have cases but without a published exact count
are shaded “reported, count TBD.” Both Michigan and Ohio have moved from daily to weekly
reporting as case growth slows. Figures will be corrected as CDC/FDA/state health departments
update their pages.
Update, September 15, 2026: CDC has ended weekly updates for this outbreak, stating the number of recent infections has declined significantly. The 2026 season figures above (cases with symptom onset May 1–August 31, 2026) are CDC’s now-closed-out count, not expected to rise further absent a new investigation.
