Newport reaches settlement with U.S. Department of Justice over proposed ICE detention facility

A group of local pilots staged a No ICE demonstration at the Newport Airport in December 2025, the day Oregon U.S. Senator Ron Wyden conducted a town hall in Newport to hear residents’ concerns about the potential federal facility.

The City of Newport has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) following nearly 10 months of litigation over the potential siting of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Newport. Under the settlement, ICE has stipulated that it currently has no plans to expand existing detention facilities or open new long- or short-term detention facilities anywhere in Oregon, according to a release from Newport city officials. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also agreed to provide the City of Newport with at least 30 days notice before issuing an environmental assessment or environmental impact statement for a plan to construct or operate a detention facility in Newport.[1]

Roxbury turns Democratic after ICE detention center fight

Roxbury, a Morris County Republican stronghold where Donald Trump won by nearly 19 points two years ago, voted Democratic in Tuesday’s congressional election after a bitter controversy over the Trump administration’s decision to locate an immigration detention center in the township.

Rep.-elect Rebecca Bennett (D-Bridgewater) defeated Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield) by 338 votes, 4,898 to 4,560, a remarkable turnaround in a municipality where Kean had posted landslide victories in his previous two congressional campaigns. Bennett received 51.1% of the vote to Kean’s 47.5%, a 3.5-point victory that represents a swing of more than 21 percentage points since 2024. In 2022, Kean carried Roxbury by more than 19 percentage points against then-Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes); he won Roxbury by 5,611 votes – more than half of his 9,309-vote margin.[2]

Courts & Lawsuits

‘Mockery, contempt’: Federal judge launches inquiry for ICE violations

A federal judge in Colorado launched an inquiry on Wednesday into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s repeated violations of court orders, telling ICE and the government’s lawyers that their conduct amounted to contempt.

Before a packed courtroom of observers, U.S. District Court Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney said she would not tolerate ICE’s practice of releasing people from immigration custody in response to judges’ orders, only to immediately arrest them again. This gentleman was ordered released, period.[3]

Recommended Stories “It appears to me we have a problem of monumental importance,” she said, addressing the government and a man who ICE immediately re-detained last week.

Federal judge temporarily blocks Trump plan to deport detained Afghans to Afghanistan

The government told the court Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had no chartered or commercial flights for deporting Afghan nationals to Afghanistan or to Pakistan at least to the end of the week.

Judge Valerie Caproni’s order, which expires Saturday, asks all officials to adhere to that. ICE books the flights weeks in advance.[4]

A letter led by California Democratic Rep. Scott Peters and signed by 65 other members of the House and Senate said they were “extremely concerned that sending vulnerable people” would expose them to “persecution, torture, or even death.”

Raids & Arrests

TV Host Who Proposed to Tom Brady in Wedding Dress Detained by ICE as Mexico Pursues Fraud Case

The former Mexican television presenter is being held in Florida over her immigration status while facing three active arrest warrants in Mexico In 2008, Inés Gómez Mont arrived at Super Bowl Media Day in a white wedding dress and veil and proposed to Tom Brady.

The TV Azteca reporter declared her love for the New England Patriots quarterback, who replied: 'I've got a few Miss Bradys in my life. Nearly 19 years later, Gómez Mont is in US immigration custody in Florida, while three arrest warrants remain active against her in Mexico. Gómez Mont, a former presenter on Ventaneando, a Mexican entertainment programme, was detained in the Miami area on 30 October 2026.[5]

ICE arrests 5 illegal immigrants near Arizona polling sites, triggering outrage from activist groups

MESA, Ariz. – Federal agents arrested five people during a targeted criminal operation outside a Mesa grocery store on Election Day, setting off fierce backlash from community advocacy groups who accused federal authorities of voter intimidation near polling locations.

The Tuesday operation unfolded outside the Food City near Southern Avenue and Mesa Drive. What we know: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that special agents carried out the enforcement action on Nov. 3 as part of an active criminal probe.[6]

"Special agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted a targeted enforcement operation that resulted in the arrests of five illegal aliens," Fernando Burgos, a public affairs officer for ICE in Arizona, told FOX 10.

Oversight & Policy

Can Democrats deliver on a promise to rein in ICE?

A Scripps News viewer from the Detroit area texted this question to us when it became clear Democrats would control both the U.S. House and Senate next year: “What accountability measures will be put in place to ensure ICE agents who abuse their authority/violate constitutional rights are investigated and prosecuted?”

While affordability and the economy propelled Democrats to victory, candidates also campaigned on a promise of being a check on ICE. Congress sets ICE spending levels and could withhold future funding, but under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Republicans approved major funding increases for the agency that will keep it with flush with money through the rest of President Trump’s term.[7]

“We have masked men in unmarked vehicles kidnapping people off our street,” said James Talarico, hours after becoming the first Texas Democrat to win a Senate seat since 1988.
