Rumonge, October 31, 2026 — Cholera has resurfaced in the Kizuka and Gatete zones of the port district of Rumonge, in Burunga province, southwestern Burundi.[1]
Key Facts
- Disease: Cholera
- Where: Location not yet reported
- Status: Reported by WHO | Regional Office for Africa[2]

The Threat
Around ten cases have been reported in the past week, including one death at home.[1]
Several patients remain hospitalized at Rumonge Hospital. Lack of clean water and poor hygiene are among the factors exposing residents to the disease.[1]
According to local administrative sources, the first four cases of cholera were identified last week in the Kizuka zone.[1]
WHO | Regional Office for Africa says: It requires protecting the communities most at risk before the next outbreak occurs. While the initial phases focused on rapidly interrupting transmission during the outbreak, the Blantyre campaign was designed to provide longer-term protection to populations living in communities that continued to face the highest risk of cholera transmission.[2]
Transmission Method
What the reports say about exposure and spread: Faced with this situation, administrative and health authorities are urging residents of the Kizuka and Gatete zones to strictly adhere to hygiene measures to limit the spread of the disease. Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are battling Mpox while Rwanda is doing everything it can to contain the spread of the deadly Marburg virus, while avoiding Mpox.[1]
How cholera spreads, according to the World Health Organization: Cholera comes from eating food or drinking water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Most people who are infected have no symptoms but can still spread the bacteria in their faeces for 1 to 10 days.[3]
Affected Regions
Places named in the reports: Burundi, Malawi.
- Sources close to the hospital indicate that seven people remain hospitalized.[1]
- Since the end of 2022, the district of Rumonge has been experiencing recurring cholera outbreaks as part of a protracted epidemic affecting all of Burundi.[1]
- Targeting five Priority Areas for Multisectoral Interventions (PAMIs), namely Chemusa, Chirimba, Chilobwe, Suya, and Mpemba, the campaign reached 186,108 people and achieved 100% administrative coverage, ensuring that communities previously vaccinated during the response phase received a second dose to strengthen and prolong immunity against cholera.[2]
Holistic & Immune Defense Outlook
There is no herb, supplement or diet that has been shown to prevent or cure cholera. Cholera can kill within hours if it is not treated. Most patients can be treated with oral rehydration solution; severe cases need intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and antibiotics. An oral cholera vaccine helps prevent it. If you have symptoms after a possible exposure, the most important step is to see a clinician quickly and tell them where you have been.
The World Health Organization’s protective steps for this disease:
- Drink safe water and use basic sanitation.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- In outbreak areas, ask whether the oral cholera vaccine is available.
What a whole-body approach can do is keep your baseline strong, so your body is better able to respond when it meets any infection. The basics have the best evidence behind them: steady sleep, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, enough water, regular movement, and keeping routine vaccinations current.
The healers of Kemet left one of the oldest medical texts in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 BCE. Its lesson still holds: watch the body closely, and act early.
