Not sure what heirs’ property means? You should learn.
Learn how to protect your family’s home and wealth during a community conversation about heirs’ property.
The community workshop, hosted by the West Indianapolis Development Corporation, will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on November 5 at the West Morris Free Methodist Church on West Morris Street. Attendance is free and open to all residents seeking guidance on heirs’ property resolution.
Heirs’ property refers to property that is passed down among family members without a will or estate plan after the owner’s death. When that happens, land could be taken over by others or lost if property taxes aren’t paid in time.
A 2024 report from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis and Black Onyx Management found many families don’t understand the legal process or have access to legal services. The report found 1,410 heirs’ properties with an estimated value of $194 million in Marion County.
The report also found that Black Americans and low-income families are among the most negatively impacted by heirs’ property. Mirror Indy, a nonprofit newsroom, is funded through grants and donations from individuals, foundations and organizations.[1]
About the Freedmen News Watch
This series follows the news that bears on Black American freedmen and their descendants, the people freed from slavery in this country: citizenship and treaty-rights cases such as the Cherokee, Creek and Seminole Freedmen, the Dawes Rolls and Freedmen’s Bureau records, heirs’ property and Black land loss, reparations and descendant-based programs, and the history and memory of emancipation. It covers the hard news and the good news alike. Every passage is quoted as reported and linked to its source, and nothing is generated. The photograph on each post is a public-domain file photo from Wikimedia Commons, credited, and shows a place or monument, not the people in the story.
