Earth Changes · Daily Report · October 21, 2026, 6:30 AM CDT

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck 76 km NE of Ozernovskiy, Russia at 3:35 a.m. UTC on Oct. 16, about 135 km (≈84 miles) below the surface, the U.S. Geological Survey reports[1]. The USGS PAGER system rates the expected impact GREEN. It is the strongest earthquake tracked by the USGS this week, with active aftershocks continuing across the region.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has 44 severe or extreme alerts in effect, led by 15 flood watches across AZ, CA, CO, NM and more.[2]

Elsewhere, Great Sitkin volcano is at alert level WATCH (aviation color code ORANGE), the Alaska Volcano Observatory says. Its latest update: “Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.”[3]

Today at a Glance

  • 17 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater, the largest M5.4
  • 44 severe or extreme U.S. weather alerts
  • 4 U.S. volcanoes above normal, including Great Sitkin
  • 3 sinkhole reports in the news

Could not be reached for this edition: Smithsonian weekly volcano report.

1. Extreme Weather

The National Hurricane Center is tracking no active tropical storms.[4]

Across the United States, the National Weather Service has 44 alerts rated severe or extreme in effect.[2]

Alert Number States
Flood Watch 15 AZ, CA, CO, NM, UT
Storm Warning 8 PK
Winter Storm Watch 7 AK
High Wind Watch 4 AK
Winter Storm Warning 4 AK
Coastal Flood Warning 3 NC, VA
Flood Warning 2 FL, GA
Severe Thunderstorm Warning 1 AZ

The Storm Prediction Center says its highest risk level for severe thunderstorms today is enhanced, on a scale that runs marginal, slight, enhanced, moderate, high.[5]

Around the world, GDACS logged 104 wildfire, 5 flood, 3 earthquake notices in the past two days, all at its lowest (Green) level.[6]

Video: TRT World, Turkey's public English-language broadcaster, verified Telegram channel, October 20, 2026 — “Emergency service helicopters were deployed to rescue people stranded on rooftops as torrential rains and severe flooding swept across eastern Spain on October 19, killing at least four people and prompting shelter-in-pl” Topic: flood. 2. Earthquakes

The USGS recorded 17 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in the past 24 hours.[7] The strongest:

Mag. Where When Depth PAGER
5.4 192 km S of Burica, Panama Oct. 20, 5:05 p.m. UTC 10 km —
5.2 68 km NE of Cabatuan, Philippines Oct. 21, 8:37 a.m. UTC 10 km —
5.1 164 km NE of Lospalos, Timor Leste Oct. 21, 7:44 a.m. UTC 123 km —

PAGER is the USGS estimate of likely deaths and damage: GREEN means little or none expected, RED means extensive. A dash means none was issued.

Earlier this week: The USGS is also continuing to monitor ongoing aftershocks and impacts from significant earthquakes recorded over the past seven days:[8]

Mag. Where When Depth PAGER
6.9 76 km NE of Ozernovskiy, Russia Oct. 16, 3:35 a.m. UTC 135 km GREEN
5.7 48 km WNW of Khuzdar, Pakistan Oct. 17, 5:06 a.m. UTC 10 km YELLOW

3. Volcanoes

In the United States, 4 volcanoes are above normal background activity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s observatories:

Volcano Alert / aviation code Latest word from scientists
Great Sitkin Watch / Orange Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.[3]
Ahyi Seamount Advisory / Yellow Plumes of discolored water seen in satellite imagery; no significant geophysical signals.[9]
Kilauea Advisory / Yellow The Halema'uma'u eruption of Kīlauea is currently paused after episode 55 fountaining ended on October 17. Summit reinflation continues today and episode 56 is forecast to occur between October 27 and November 6, 2026.[10]
Shishaldin Advisory / Yellow Low-level unrest continues.[3]

Alert levels run Normal, Advisory, Watch, Warning. Aviation codes run Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.

4. Sinkholes

No government agency publishes a live national sinkhole feed, so these come from today’s local news:

  • Weirton Daily Times reports, “Trending FOLLANSBEE – Follansbee Council, during a special meeting preceding Monday’s regular council meeting, agreed to contract for the replacement of a stormwater line which caused a sinkhole to open in a residential neighborhood.”[11]
  • Daily Hampshire Gazette reports, “EASTHAMPTON — The city has declared a state of emergency to address the Ferry Street sinkhole as repair cost estimates have grown to nearly $500,000 and a timeline for the end of construction remains undetermined.”[12]
  • Tampa Bay 28 reports, “LEVY COUNTY, Fla. — Chiefland Fire Department (CFD) said crews saved a dog trapped in a Levy County sinkhole.”[13]

Other natural-hazard video from the past day, from news organizations:

Video: Associated Press, October 21, 2026 — “Factory workers in Pakistan face dangerous conditions under extreme heat”. Also in the news. Picked because its title names a natural hazard; it may not be covered in the data above.

Video: AccuWeather, October 20, 2026 — “Inside Valencia's Flood Nightmare as Streets Turn Into Rivers”. Also in the news.

5. What the Experts Say

These are the words of the scientists and forecasters who watch these hazards for a living, quoted exactly.

“Severe thunderstorms with a potential for large hail, severe wind gusts and a couple tornadoes are expected today along the Mogollon Rim across parts of Arizona. Marginally severe wind gusts and an isolated tornado threat will also be possible along the southern and central California Coast.”

— NOAA Storm Prediction Center[5]

“The Kuril-Kamchatka Arc extends approximately 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, until terminating at its intersection with the Aleutian arc south of the Commander Islands, Russia. It marks the region where the Pacific plate subducts into the mantle beneath the Okhotsk mircoplate, a proposed regional subdivision of the larger North America plate. This subduction is responsible for the generation of the Kuril Islands chain, volcanoes along the entire arc, and the deep Kuril-Kamchatka Trench.”

— U.S. Geological Survey, “Seismotectonics of the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc,” on the region around the M5.4 quake[14]

“Lava continues to erupt slowly within the summit crater of Great Sitkin Volcano. A few small earthquakes were detected in the past day. Satellite and webcam views were obscured by clouds.”

— Alaska Volcano Observatory, on Great Sitkin[3]

“Plumes of discolored water were seen in the ocean above Ahyi on October 9 and 11 this past week. Discolored greenish water was visible drifting more than 7 km from the summit of Ahyi. These plumes are likely associated with degassing and hydrothermal activity at the summit of the underwater volcano.”

— Northern Mariana Islands, on Ahyi Seamount[9]

“Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or other rocks that can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground. Sinkholes are dramatic because the land usually stays intact for a while until the underground spaces just get too big.”

— U.S. Geological Survey Water Science School, on why sinkholes form[15]

How to Prepare

  • Keep a basic kit: water (one gallon per person per day for several days), food, a battery or hand-crank radio, a whistle, a dust mask and phone chargers.[16]
  • Get alerts: Wireless Emergency Alerts need no sign-up; the FEMA app, NOAA Weather Radio, the USGS Earthquake Notification Service and the USGS Volcano Notification Service are free.
  • Floods: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot can sweep a car away.[17]
  • Earthquakes: Drop, Cover and Hold On.[18]
  • Download the checklist: Be Ready: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Extreme Weather and Sinkholes (PDF), with today’s active hazards first.
