Earth Changes · Daily Report · October 18, 2026, 11:49 PM CDT

Hurricane Trudy is churning in the eastern Pacific with top winds near 80 mph and a central pressure of 984 millibars, moving northwest at 7 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.[1]

Meanwhile, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck 76 km NE of Ozernovskiy, Russia at 3:35 a.m. UTC on Oct. 16, about 135 km (≈84 miles) below the surface, the U.S. Geological Survey reports[2]. The USGS PAGER system rates the expected impact GREEN. It is the strongest earthquake tracked by the USGS this week, with active aftershocks continuing across the region.

Elsewhere, Great Sitkin volcano is at alert level WATCH (aviation color code ORANGE), the Alaska Volcano Observatory says. Its latest update: “Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.”[3]

Today at a Glance

  • 9 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater, the largest M5.2
  • 1 active tropical system: Hurricane Trudy
  • 18 severe or extreme U.S. weather alerts
  • 4 U.S. volcanoes above normal, including Great Sitkin
  • 3 sinkhole reports in the news

Could not be reached for this edition: Smithsonian weekly volcano report.

1. Extreme Weather

Tropical storms and hurricanes

  • Hurricane Trudy (eastern Pacific): top winds near 80 mph, moving northwest at 7 mph. Latest advisory.[1]

Across the United States, the National Weather Service has 18 alerts rated severe or extreme in effect.[4]

Alert Number States
Winter Storm Warning 4 AK
Freeze Warning 3 KY, MD, PA, VA
Coastal Flood Warning 2 NC
Flood Warning 2 FL, GA
Flood Watch 2 AK
High Wind Watch 2 AK, NC
Winter Storm Watch 2 AK
Storm Watch 1 AM

The Storm Prediction Center says no severe thunderstorm areas are forecast today.[5]

Around the world, GDACS logged 62 wildfire, 1 earthquake notices in the past two days, all at its lowest (Green) level.[6]

2. Earthquakes

The USGS recorded 9 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in the past 24 hours.[7] The strongest:

PAGER is the USGS estimate of likely deaths and damage: GREEN means little or none expected, RED means extensive. A dash means none was issued.

Earlier this week: The USGS is also continuing to monitor ongoing aftershocks and impacts from significant earthquakes recorded over the past seven days:[8]

Mag. Where When Depth PAGER
6.9 76 km NE of Ozernovskiy, Russia Oct. 16, 3:35 a.m. UTC 135 km GREEN

3. Volcanoes

In the United States, 4 volcanoes are above normal background activity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s observatories:

Volcano Alert / aviation code Latest word from scientists
Great Sitkin Watch / Orange Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.[3]
Ahyi Seamount Advisory / Yellow Plumes of discolored water seen in satellite imagery; no significant geophysical signals.[9]
Kilauea Advisory / Yellow The Halema'uma'u eruption of Kīlauea is currently paused after episode 55 fountaining ended yesterday at 9:03 a.m. HST. Summit reinflation continues today following the end of the fountaining.[10]
Shishaldin Advisory / Yellow Low-level unrest continues.[3]

Alert levels run Normal, Advisory, Watch, Warning. Aviation codes run Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.

4. Sinkholes

No government agency publishes a live national sinkhole feed, so these come from today’s local news:

  • Daily Hampshire Gazette reports, “EASTHAMPTON — Demolition of several century-old mill structures on Ferry Street is expected to begin within weeks, even as crews work to determine what caused a large sinkhole that opened in the middle of the street earlier this month.”[11]
  • Hoodline reports, “A sinkhole opened near South 22nd”[12]
  • Inkorr reports, “Massive Landslide Endangers Actor’s Malibu Residence In Malibu, California, Nicolas Cage is racing against time to protect his oceanfront estate from a rapidly expanding sinkhole that emerged near his property in September 2026.”[13]

Other natural-hazard video from the past day, from news organizations:

Video: ABC News, October 18, 2026 — “Hundreds of firefighters battle California wildfires”. Also in the news. Picked because its title names a natural hazard; it may not be covered in the data above.

5. What the Experts Say

These are the words of the scientists and forecasters who watch these hazards for a living, quoted exactly.

“Examining the last-light visible satellite imagery of Trudy, it is becoming clear that the hurricane is starting to rapidly weaken. The coldest cloud tops within the cyclone on infrared imagery are now around -55 degrees C, and the convection continues to decline at a steady rate. This degradation in Trudy's structure is likely due to a combination of the southwesterly shear and some dry air intrusion into the core of the cyclone. Using a combination of the objective and subjective intensity estimates, the intensity has been lowered to 70 kt for this advisory.”

— Forecaster Katz/Papin, National Hurricane Center, on Hurricane Trudy[14]

“Severe thunderstorms are not forecast across the U.S. through tonight.”

— Forecaster Broyles, NOAA Storm Prediction Center[5]

“The Kuril-Kamchatka Arc extends approximately 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, until terminating at its intersection with the Aleutian arc south of the Commander Islands, Russia. It marks the region where the Pacific plate subducts into the mantle beneath the Okhotsk mircoplate, a proposed regional subdivision of the larger North America plate. This subduction is responsible for the generation of the Kuril Islands chain, volcanoes along the entire arc, and the deep Kuril-Kamchatka Trench.”

— U.S. Geological Survey, “Seismotectonics of the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc,” on the region around the M5.2 quake[15]

“Lava continues to erupt slowly within the summit crater of Great Sitkin Volcano. A few small earthquakes and rockfalls were detected in the past day. Weakly elevated surface temperatures were observed in a partly cloudy satellite view, otherwise satellite and webcam views were obscured by clouds.”

— Alaska Volcano Observatory, on Great Sitkin[3]

“Plumes of discolored water were seen in the ocean above Ahyi on October 9 and 11 this past week. Discolored greenish water was visible drifting more than 7 km from the summit of Ahyi. These plumes are likely associated with degassing and hydrothermal activity at the summit of the underwater volcano.”

— Northern Mariana Islands, on Ahyi Seamount[9]

“Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or other rocks that can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground. Sinkholes are dramatic because the land usually stays intact for a while until the underground spaces just get too big.”

— U.S. Geological Survey Water Science School, on why sinkholes form[16]

How to Prepare

  • Keep a basic kit: water (one gallon per person per day for several days), food, a battery or hand-crank radio, a whistle, a dust mask and phone chargers.[17]
  • Get alerts: Wireless Emergency Alerts need no sign-up; the FEMA app, NOAA Weather Radio, the USGS Earthquake Notification Service and the USGS Volcano Notification Service are free.
  • Floods: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot can sweep a car away.[18]
  • Earthquakes: Drop, Cover and Hold On.[19]
  • Download the checklist: Be Ready: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Extreme Weather and Sinkholes (PDF), with today’s active hazards first.
